The Discussion of Similarity and Difference in Confucius' Portraits from Mencius and Xunzi

Abstract

"Mencius" and "Xunzi" in each one the image of Confucius, another of the same, can be found in "Confucius" in the Mencius and Xun important saints with the image of philosophy, but also shows the spirit of Confucianism; each other's differences, then Meng, Xun philosophical understanding of "Confucius" image and its position is closely related to the choice of interpretation. This phenomenon, in addition to that "Confucius" image of diversity, but also illustrates the philosophy over the traditional continuity of the different philosophers of transformation and choose to take. There is a Confucius portrait in both books, Mencius and Xunzi. From the similarity of the portraits, one could find the influence of the sacred image of Confucius on Mencius's and Xunzi's philosophic thought, as well as the existence of Confucianism spirit. From the difference of the portraits, one could also see the different interpretations of Mencius's and Xunzi's philosophies are deeply associated with "Confucius" images and beliefs. This phenomenon, not only shows the variety of "Confucius" portraits, but also demonstrates transitions and interpretations made in the process of developing philosophy.
