Abstract Moral education in this paper is given a broader meaning than is usually the case, to include the socialization process as a whole. Until the middle of the 1800s education in Sweden was wholly administered by the Church. The educational system can today be seen as an instrument serving to fulfil the national democratic goals of justice and equality. Objectivity and all?round clarification of subject matter should characterize teaching. Thus, moral education in a narrow sense should not be given in the compulsory school. Research projects dealing with pedagogical problems in teaching socially desirable attitudes are described. From a learning as well as an ideological point of view it is stated that the developmental process of moral education rather than the transmission of normative values should be stressed. The Handbook of Sex Education and Personal Relationships is cited as an example of a pronounced moral and ideological approach in teaching. Education within the Church plays a subordinate role in Sweden. Extended parental education and family social service are political as well as educational goals
