The Language of Retreat and the Eremitic Ideal in some Letters of Peter the Venerable

Abstract

Eremitism was an important facet of twelfth century monastic life. This article examines four letters in particular of Peter the Venerable which show a concentration of terms and topoi connected with retreat. It considers whether these letters should be interpreted as an endorsement of the eremitic ideal, or whether they may be seen to be serving other purposes
