Abstract
ABSTRACTAlthough genitalia only make up a tiny portion of the human body's surface area, their shape and appearance have great consequence for life trajectories and the ways in which bodies and people are understood. Intersex people, born with bodies that are not classifiable under a binary male/female construct, are increasingly embracing intersex identities, but intelligibility in society can be difficult to realize because cultural models and language serve to render their bodies unintelligible. This study explores a case study from New Zealand, deploying discourse analysis to examine two sources of data: recordings in a secondary school sexuality education classroom and published government documents. Cultural models of binary male–female hold sway in both data sources, but by looking past this apparent dissonance during the analysis it becomes clear that the classroom participants stop orienting to the binary. In this way, they speak intersex genitals and bodies into existence despite the lack of specific lexical items for the task.
