Abstract

Au-delà de la générosité et de l’ambiguïté du texte hobbesien, qui laisse souvent indéterminée la façon de l’interpréter, il y a un univers plus riche encore, celui des commentateurs. Dans ce qui suit, on analysera le commentaire que propose le juriste allemand Carl Schmitt, dans son livre Le Léviathan dans la doctrine de l’État de Thomas Hobbes. Ce n’est pas par hasard que Schmitt s’inscrit parmi les commentateurs de Hobbes; il saisit l’occasion de fonder sa propre théorie de la décision et de signaler finalement l’échec fonctionnel et technique du Léviathan comme symbole de l’État total. Autrement dit, quoi qu’il soit son ami ou son ennemi, Hobbes reste pour Schmitt une source toujours prête à légitimer ses propres options et même son destin politique.
