Abstract

A claim to “healthy ecosystems” comes from the inclusion of the systems thinking required to make judgments on the desirability of an ecological character. It is also explicit about the health of components of the ecosystem, and whether organizations are adaptive and responsive to ecosystem changes. In short, an ecosystem can be “unhealthy”; health is a powerful metaphor for the condition of an ecosystem, and ecosystem approaches to human health make critical contributions to public health.
