Abstract

Bei Tocquevilles fast gleichaltrigem Zeitgenossen John Stuart Mill Umfang und Richtung der intellektuellen Einflussnahme zu klären, ist ein komplizierteres Unterfangen. In direkter Manier hat wohl keener von beiden den jeweils anderen wirklich significant geprägt. Andererseits ist es durchaus auffällig, wie sehr sich beide wenigstens zeitweilig mit den gleichen Fragen der modernen Demokratie beschäftigt und im Ergebnis auch beide einen aristokratisch-elitär geprägten Liberalismus vertreten haben.
