Abstract

The encyclopaedic ideal, which is an ideal of describing totality, is caught in four contradictions: the contradiction of the real and the symbolic , the contradiction of unity and multiplicity , the contradiction of exhaustiveness and choice , the contradiction of definitiveness and change . These contradictions cannot be resolved, they constitute the limitation of encylopaedism but also its grandeur
