Abstract

How is it possible to define human “liberty”? What does it mean “ethics of liberty”? What are the most important ethical problems in our society? Opinions on what constitute “liberty” can vary widely, but can be generally classified as “positive” liberty and “negative” liberty. John Stuart Mill, in his work, On Liberty, defines the difference between liberty as the “freedom” to “act” and liberty as the “absence” of “coercion”. Human “tragedy” in modern society is that culture, scientific-technological “automatisms” and political system drive us too far from pure, real and deep “authenticity” of the “ethics of liberty”. Moving from this point of view, it is analysed the book of Giulio Giorello-Dario Antiseri, Libertà. Un manifesto per credenti e non credenti, Postfazione di Silvano Tagliagambe, Bompiani, Milano, 2008 and are outlined new perspectives of research in ethics, in particular connection with philosophy, science, theology, metaphysics and anthropology.
