Jointly funded by Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society and the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research NWO, the project enabled a number of early career scholars working on lived Islam in Europe to plan the possibility of a volume on the topic. In March 2011, a seminar was held in Copenhagen, funded and convened by the Centre of European Islamic Thought, University of Copenhagen and the AHRC/ESRC Religion and Society Programme based at Lancaster University, to plan out the contents of the book.
