Abstract

One aim of contemporary philosophy of biology is to secure a use of functional statements in which there would be no implication of reversed causation or anthropomorphic interpretation. Among the recent alternatives, Millikan's theory is most notable for the way it allows to explain the possible divorce between legitimate functional ascriptions and lack of corresponding functional activity, as in disease or congenital atrophy cases. It is argued that the crucial distinction between causes and means can be better understood with a reference to the contrast between developmental and selectional explanations
