Abstract

Reductionism in biology concerns the relations between biology and physico-chemic sciences. It is both historically and epistemologically analysed. Two historical moments are studied: the origins of the cell theory and the contact between cell theory and mendellian genetic. Epistemological analysis concerns first the peculiarity of functional explanation. Logical analysis is complemented by a tentative reduction of the function of hemoglobin to his biochemical structure. Second, reduction between theories will be analysed. Finally, the convergence between historical and epistemological analysis will be emphasized.
