Abstract

Selon Wittgenstein « la théorie des ensembles part du concept de fonction défini par Dirichlet ». Cette remarque généalogique n'est pas seulement décisive dans la philosophie des mathématiques de Wittgenstein. Le concept de « fonction arbitraire » dû à Dirichlet, en effet, qui étend d'abord la notion de fonction au-delà des mathématiques, en rend de surcroît la règle variable et finit même par se placer au-dessus des lois. Le rôle que Wittgenstein accorde à Dirichlet définit donc un précédent éclairant pour les thèses paradoxales qu'il soutient au sujet des règles, même si le cas des fonctions mathématiques y forme une exception. Ainsi, c'est toute la question de la règle qui est à repenser à partir des possibilités ouvertes par Dirichlet. Dans le commentaire de Kripke, en particulier, l'interprétation sceptique peut être évitée en isolant un noyau dur qui explicite et corrobore la lecture proposée ici. The concept of « arbitrary function », originating from Dirichlet, who was the first to extend the notion of function beyond mathematics, additionally renders its rule variable and ultimately allows it to be placed above the laws. The role that Wittgenstein assigns to Dirichlet thereby defines an enlightening precedent for the paradoxical theses that he defends regarding rules, even if the case of mathematical functions emerges as an exception. Thus, it is the whole question of the rule that is to be reconsidered following the new possibilities set forth by Dirichlet. In Kripke's commentary, in particular, the skeptical interpretation can be avoided by isolating a core theory which specifies and corroborates the interpretation proposed here.
