Abstract

Teachers in schools are among the most powerful and beleaguered adults in Western civilization: powerful because their influence over young minds, beleaguered as a result of responsibilities which are often out of proportion to their authority. In this optimistic and encouraging book, the author provides a framework for thought and action, a readable synthesis of portraits, case studies and research, and concrete suggestions of ways to initiate and sustain thoughtful teaching in context. This is a practical handbook for use by new and experienced teachers, as well as by teacher trainers.
