Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the notion of biological function in Comte's System. The first part demonstrates the finely wrought conceptual arguments that underpin Comte's deduction of this notion. Deduced from Comte's definition of life, the idea of « function » allows him, further on, to define the scientific goal of biology : to establish harmony between the structural and functional points of view. The second part of our study stresses the central role of the notion of function in Comte's philosophy of biology : this notion allows Comte to integrate Bichat's tissue anatomy into his work and to give preference to synthesis over analysis. Lastly, the complexity of this notion leads us to an understanding of the nature of Comte's anti-vitalism.
