Abstract

Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on Genesis 4 : 1-16 sadly illustrates the anti-Judaism of patristic tradition : Cain, who killed Abel – a figure of Christ – is the father of the Jews who murdered Jesus . Thus Christianity prepared the way for the anti-Semiticism of modern times, which John XXIII deplored not long before his death. Today, Christian theology and exegesis have denounced the arbitrary and misled prejudices of such an interpretation, which transforms the victim into the executioner
