Abstract

Palabras clave: OEA; Carta Democrática Interamericana; Perú; Venezuela; Honduras OEA and Democracy in the XXI Century: These pages examine the nature of the present challenge to Latin American democracies, from the perspective of relevant hemispheric democratic commitments. In light of such commitments, the recent political crisis in Honduras can be considered as a serious regression: not simply because of the military intervention in the overthrowing of José Manuel Zelaya, but because of the abandonment of the principle according to which democracy is a human right, and it is a duty of governments to preserve and defend it. Keywords: OEA; Inter-American Democratic Charter; Peru; Venezuela; Honduras
