What explains the fact that some individuals are arranged thus-and-so as opposed to so-and-thus? Is the amatory relation nothing over and above the intrinsic properties of the lover and the beloved, or not? Can relations individuate individuals?This collection of thirteen papers focuses on these and related questions. The title gives a good indication of its contents. The essays challenge received views and offer alternative readings of contemporary debates about the nature of relations, the puzzle of converse relations, the distinction between internal and external relations, and physical and mathematical structuralism, as well as some ancient and medieval perspectives.
