The paper seeks to dissect the meaning, people’s understanding, effects and consequences of whistleblowing. It also tries to define the implications the act has as laid down in United Arab Emirates law. It spells out the major concerns that exist about whistleblowing in the UAE and the world more generally. There exist several differences between the UAE law and that of other countries regarding whistleblowing. These differences affect the overall understanding in the region, the frequency of reporting cases occurring and (...) the penalties that result. This has a number of implications if viewed from a corporate viewpoint, particularly where companies are operating in a number of jurisdictions as is increasingly common. Given that domestic operators require current information, as do transnational operators entering the UAE market, the paper concludes by highlighting the existing and impending legislation that protect whistleblowers in the UAE and the laws required in order to provide sufficient protection to whistleblowers. It is common to muse over the perils of thinking like an economist. There is, we are told, something missing when we only weigh the costs and benefits of some options before us, and then choose the one that will lead to the greatest utility. Such a view is now commonplace in philosophy curriculums, and it has been defended, for example, by Michael Sandel, Debra Satz, and Elizabeth Anderson. This paper, conversely, explains how scholars regularly underestimate the extent to which (...) economics applies to their viewpoint, and how the field of economics is frequently portrayed in a misleading way. It will make clear the perils of not thinking like an economist, especially for philosophers, and it will right the caricatures we can too often hear about economists. Both philosophers and economists think about the same issue, namely the question of value. Economics, however, examines the consequences of value judgments, and as such it is an essential feature of any practical proposition about value in society. (shrink)

This article argues that universities have duties to negotiate contracts with the pharmaceutical industry that are favourable to the world’s poor, and to do more research into diseases which disproportionately strike the global poor. It is argued that these duties are related to human rights (in particular to a human right to health) and that they are therefore very weighty. Furthermore, these duties are in line with some of the most important things that Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM), a (...) worldwide group of students and academics, wants universities to do. A number of objections are discussed, among other things to do with safeguarding pharmaceutical innovation, and it is argued that the aforementioned duties should, as UAEM also advocates, often be combined with efforts on the part of universities to work towards more long-term, large-scale institutional arrangements to ensure access to and availability of essential medicines for the global poor. -/- .
