In The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir diagnoses “woman” as the “lost sex,” torn between her individual autonomy and her “feminine destiny.” Becoming a “real woman” in patriarchal societies demands that women lose their authentic, autonomous selves to become the “inessential Other” for Man. To better understand this diagnosis and how women might refind themselves, I rehabilitate the influence of Søren Kierkegaard and his concept of repetition as what must be lost to be found again in Beauvoir’s account of freedom (...) and, specifically, the liberation of women. Beauvoir offers a dual account of repetition, that of mundane repetition and sacrificial repetition, bringing them to bear both on her diagnosis of women’s oppression and her theorization of our liberation. Sacrificial repetition becomes a temporality for freedom—one must be able to repeat or retake their autonomy continuously toward an open future. For this to happen concretely, Beauvoir insists that we must sacrifice the (racist, classist) patriarchal ideals of the “real woman” and “real man” as we retake our autonomy and reconfigure the meaning of sex difference anew. This article examines the thought of the nineteenth-century French thinker Jules Lequyer, who influenced Charles Renouvier, William James, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Charles Hartshorne, who never ceased to promote Lequyer's importance, refers to the Frenchman in all but five of his twenty-one books. Lequyer is especially noteworthy because of his philosophical defense of human freedom against any sort of determinism.

El presente artículo quiere acercarse al misterio del mal en la obra de S. Kierkegaard. Tomando como punto de partida la obra lanzada al mundo en vida del autor, tanto la pseudónima como la firmada por él mismo, este texto aborda el misterio del mal y su relación con el Amor de Dios, misterio central del citado pensador. Aquí se pone en valor la importancia de acercarse al misterio de la iniquidad también desde los discursos edificantes así como en Las (...) obras del amor. Al hacer esto aportamos una aproximación diferente al misterio del mal en la recepción kierkegaardiana y se pone de relevancia el amor como la manera de abordar el mal sin hacernos cómplices del mismo. Esto se hace posible, entre otros elementos, porque Dios y el que ama, mutatis mutandis, no ven lo malo del mal. (shrink)

Resumen Kierkegaard, en su Diario, ha dado un juicio filosófico favorable sobre los actos con los que Lutero ha iniciado la Reforma, pues con estos ha afirmado la autoridad de competencia del individuo que es un prius respecto al Estado y a la Iglesia. Por otro lado, Kierkegaard ha señalado que estos actos han sido viciados por razones filosóficas que han llevado no sólo a la formación de la Iglesia de Estado, sino a la del Estado-Iglesia. Primeramente, se trata de (...) razones de carácter político-filosóficas: una concepción del Poder confusa, una desvalorización del individuo a favor de la comunidad y del Estado, una perspectiva equivocada de la felicidad-salvación del hombre. Además, Kierkegaard ha señalado razones estrictamente filosóficas que han llevado al Estado-Iglesia: una equivocada concepción del ser y una errónea visión de lo que es la razón y el conocimiento. Estas razones, positivas y negativas, señalan cuestiones aún no resueltas en nuestros tiempos.Kierkegaard in his Diary has ¿ven a favorable philosophical judgment on the facts with which Luther has initiated the Reforma, for with these has affirmed the compeUnce authoritj of the individual who is a prius with respect to the State and the Church. On the other hand, Kierkegaard has pointed out that these acts have been vitiated by philosop bical reasons that have led not onlj to the formation of the Church of State, but to that of the Church-State. Firstlj, these are politicalphilosophical reasons: a confused conception of power, a devaluation of the individual in favor of the community and the state, a mistaken perspective of man's happiness and salvation. In addition, Kierkegaard has pointed out strictlj philosoph-ical reasons that have led the Church State: a mistaken conception of being and an erroneous visión of what is reason and knowledge. A partir de la disertación de Kierkegaard, Del concepto de la ironía, con particular atención a Sócrates, el autor ensaya una reivindicación de este texto no ya como obra juvenil y de menor importancia, sino como un trabajo maduro. En este artículo, primeramente, se caracteriza el pensamiento de Kierkegaard y sus principales temas desde la perspectiva biográfica y autobiográfica de Kierkegaard, quien, para el autor, debe ser definido como un escritor que, con terminología filosófica y dentro de un ambiente cristiano, (...) persigue la verdad en una búsqueda de su propia identidad con particular énfasis en el problema de la libertad que se desarrolla en la existencia. En segundo lugar, se intenta demostrar que los conceptos elementales de la filosofía kierkegaardiana, como la subjetividad y la existencia, ya se encuentran elaborados en la disertación de 1841. Y, en tercer lugar, se pretende mostrar que otros conceptos centrales de la filosofía kierkegaardiana, si bien no están desarrollados en la disertación, sí están perfilados o prefigurados. (shrink)

Recent readings of Kierkegaard's Works of Love have admirably shown how his apparent reservations about romantic love can be deflected on his own terms by imbuing them with some of the moral rigor of neighbor‐love. This paper argues however that these readings must be complemented by the reverse argument, which would show how some of the qualities of romantic loves are in fact preserved in neighbor‐love. By drawing on his dialectics of sensate love, psychical love, spiritual love, and self‐love, I (...) show how Kierkegaard believes neighbor‐love should be impartial and yet exhibit some of the character of preferential romantic loves. This essay analyzes the first among the three moments of Georges Bataille’s reception of Nietzsche’s thought. During the 1930s, in the context of the review Acéphale, the French writer takes position in the debate about the relationship between Nietzscheism and fascism. He lays claim on the heritage of the German thinker as the source of a “heterogeneous” politics. This group of articles provides the context in which Bataille can start to delineate an original meditation on the relationship between work and (...) society. In this sense, they will mark a turning point in the path toward the post-war developments on the writers’ engagement. A new thematization of the relationship between text and context will emerge from the confrontation with Nietzsche and from the articulation of the fundamental duality of the forms of politics.
