One of the urgent tasks facing Christian educators at the present time is how they might encourage the spiritual growth of their students. This paper invites reflection on this central question by discussing the role aesthetics might play with particular focus on its relationship to the ‘spiritual senses’, a theme which has been strikingly absent from recent publications on religion and Christian education. Paying particular attention to the work of the contemporary French phenomenologist, Jean-Louis Chrétien, I shall argue that art (...) invites us to listen to as well as to see the power of beauty. Educators should not ignore this capacity of art to engage the spiritual senses within a contemplative ethos of silence. But I go further than simply pointing to these seminal ideas about Christian formation, by discussing the ‘wound’ that beauty inevitably inflicts. I illustrate this suggestion by referring to Pope Benedict XVI's essay ‘Wounded by the Arrow of the Beautiful’ and to two visualizations of religion: Delacroix's painting Fight between Jacob and the Angel and Beauvois' film Of Gods and Men. Contemporary professional restaurant reviews have consequences beyond the dinner plate. They now face challenges from the democratizing efforts of blogs and crowd-sourced reviews. Thus an analysis seems appropriate for determining how they are written and what might be lost should they be replaced. Restaurant reviews are presumed to be a species of art and literary criticism and as such have evolved as a rhetorical genre. Through genre analysis we inductively construct the form of the professional restaurant review and then apply (...) it deductively to recent reviews to discover any substantive and stylistic differences that have arisen in the evolution of this genre of writing. We conclude with a critique of this genre that reveals ethical implications for the uses of metaphors in professional restaurant reviews. (shrink)

Artykuł jest poświęcony „unikatowości” i „osobliwości” – zarówno jako terminom, które funkcjo­nują w ramach dyskursu teoretyczno-estetycznego, jak i wyrazom odgrywającym istotną rolę w języku potocznym. Poza kontekstem estetyki i filozoficznej refleksji nad sztuką są one powszechnie wykorzystywane przez podmioty realizujące zadania z zakresu polityki społeczno-kulturalnej do promowania wydarzeń, zjawisk i obiektów, mimo iż zarówno ich etymologia, semantyka oraz pragmatyka językowa wskazują, że są problematyczne. Mają bowiem w swoje definicje leksy­kalne wpisane wartościowanie, a także nabierają dodatkowej wartości oceniającej w różnych kontekstach. (...) Ponadto, bazując na słownikowych definicjach dostrzec można, że „unikatowość” i „osobliwość” są wyrazami funkcjonującymi w rodzinie semantycznej stwarzają­cej istotne ryzyko zatarcia znaczeń poszczególnych słów, czego efektem jest także niejedno­znaczność w estetyczno-normatywnej ocenie zjawisk opisywanych za pomocą „unikato­wości” i „oso­bliwości”, nawet jeśli ujmowane są ściślej, jako terminy naukowe funk­cjo­nujących w dyskursie teoretyczno-estetycznym. Analiza źródłosłowów, charakterystyka normatyw­nego potencjału „unikatowości” i „osobliwości” oraz wyrazów, które są im pokrewne, a także podkre­ślenie roli kontekstu, w jakim występują, zestawiona z podstawowym ich zna­czeniem w wy­branych językach nowożytnych, pozwoli uwidocznić kluczowe problemy językowe w doświad­czeniu potocznym, ale również wskazać istotne z punktu widzenia zagadnień specjalistycznych różnice terminologiczne. Computer vision research involving street and road detection methods usually focuses on driving assistance and autonomous vehicle systems. In this context, street segmentation occurs in real-time, based on images centered on the street. This work, on the other hand, uses street segmentation for urban planning research to classify pavement types of a city or region, which is particularly important for developing countries. For this application, it is needed a dataset with images from various locations for each street. These images are (...) not necessarily centered on the street and include challenges that are not common in street segmentation datasets, such as mixed pavement types and the presence of faults and holes on the street. We implemented a multi-class version of a state-of-the-art segmentation algorithm and adapted it to perform street pavement classification, handling navigation along streets and angle variation to increase the accuracy of the classification. A data augmentation approach is also proposed to use preliminary results from the test instances as new ground truth and increase the amount of training data. A dataset with more than 300,000 images from 773 streets from a Brazilian city was built. Our approach achieved a precision of 0.93, showing the feasibility of the proposed application. (shrink)

In this dissertation I examine the topics of ethics, religion, and their relationship in the work of Charles Taylor. I take Taylor's attempt to confront modern disenchantment by seeking a kind of re-enchantment as my guiding thread. Seeking re-enchantment means, first of all, defending an `engaged realist' account of strong evaluation, i.e., qualitative distinctions of value that are seen as normative for our desires. Secondly, it means overcoming self-enclosure and achieving self-transcendence, which I argue should be understood in terms of (...) transcending a `lower' mode of selfhood for a `higher' one in concern for `strong goods'. One of the main issues that Taylor raises is whether re-enchantment requires theism for its full adequacy. He advances - often as `hunches' - controversial claims regarding the significance of theism (1) for defending strong evaluative realism and (2) for motivating an ethic of universal human concern. I seek to fill out his hunches in terms of a theistic teleological perspective that is centered on the `telos of communion'. I argue that such a view is important for overcoming the problem of what Bernard Williams calls the `radical contingency' of ethical beliefs, which seems to undermine their normative authority. However, I argue that if a non-theistic view of cosmic purpose (e.g., Thomas Nagel's view) can be regarded as a viable option, then it could also help to address this problem and support a kind of re-enchantment. Taylor also advances the controversial view that (3) there is an ineradicable draw to `transcendence' in human life in connection to the quest for the meaning of life. Here he opposes certain mainstream theories of secularization that see it as a process involving the ineluctable fading away of the relevance of religion. I seek to fill out and defend Taylor's view in this matter. Besides providing a reading of Taylor's work as a whole and advancing further some of the issues he raises, I also examine his general evaluative framework based on his account of strong evaluation. In doing so I show how he provides a distinct and important perspective among contemporary moral philosophers. (shrink)
