  1. Descartes on Degrees of Freedom.C. P. Ragland - 2013 - Essays in Philosophy 14 (2):239-268.
In an influential article, Anthony Kenny charged that (a) the view of freedom in Descartes’ “1645 letter to Mesland” is incoherent, and (b) that this incoherence was present in Descartes’ thought from the beginning. Against (b), I argue that such incoherence would rather support Gilson’s suspicions that the 1645 letter is dishonest. Against (a), I offer a close reading of the letter, showing that Kenny’s objection seems plausible only if we misconstrue a key ambiguity in the text. I close by (...)

  • Immanuel Kant and the Question of Certainty in Politics.Alvydas Jokubaitis - 2021 - Problemos 100:75-86.
Researchers of Kant’s political philosophy have not paid enough attention to the problem of certainty in politics which is inseparable from the distinction between phenomenon and noumenon. The primacy of practical reason means that morality has a higher value than knowledge. This is a fundamental presupposition of Kant’s philosophy. However, this emphasis on the importance of morality leads to the problematic question of certainty in politics. The recognition of the primacy of morality seems to lead to a situation where politics (...)

  • Será que ainda somos cartesianos? Breve excurso sobre a ideia de vida.Eurico Carvalho - 2020 - Principia: An International Journal of Epistemology 24 (3):523-549.

  • The Cartesian Circle and Significance of the Concept of God in Descartes’s Epistemology.Nur Betül Atakul - 2022 - Cumhuriyet İlahiyat Dergisi 26 (3):1215-1233.
Descartes’ Meditations raised a serious question about whether he committed a logical fallacy while proving God’s existence and veracity. The crux of the allegation is him saying the truth of the clear and distinct perceptions depend on God’s veracity while its validity rests on some clear and distinct perceptions such as Cogito. At first glance Meditations justify this charge if not been attentively read. Disposal of the Cartesian circle claim depends on showing at least some clear and distinct perceptions are (...)

  • An anarchy of man : Cartesian and post-Cartesian representations of the self in selected Western literature.Joel Spencer - unknown
This Master of Arts thesis is in two parts: a novel, An Anarchy of Man, and an exegesis which places the novel in relation to philosophical concerns about the self and the way those concerns are portrayed in selected works of Western literature. The novel is set in Canberra and Sydney and tells the story of the relationship between two characters: Joe and Gin. It explores the way we in the modern Western world think about ourselves and those around us. (...)
