  1. Acting Through Inaction: The Distinction Between Leisure and Reverie in Jacques Rancière’s Conception of Emancipation.Alison Ross - 2019 - Journal of French and Francophone Philosophy 27 (2):76-94.
The classical distinction between leisure and work is often used to define features of the emancipated life. In Aristotle leisure is defined as time devoted to purposeful activity, and distinguished from the labour time expended merely to produce life’s necessities. In critical theory, this classical distinction has been adapted to provide an image of emancipated life, as purposively driven, fulfilling and meaningful activity. Aspects of this adapted definition undermine the classical leisure/work distinction to the extent that the demand for meaningful (...)

  • The disidentified community: Rancière reading (nancy reading) Blanchot.Jen Hui Bon Hoa - 2018 - Angelaki 23 (6):33-51.
In The Disavowed Community, Jean-Luc Nancy presents a critique of his seminal 1983 essay “The Inoperative Community.” According to Nancy, his error in attempting to derive a politics from Maurice Blanchot’s concept of unworking lay in conflating politics and ontology. In pursuing this contention, I trace out the tacit response to the exchange between Nancy and (...)

  • Narrated Desire: Reflections on Flaubert’s Sentimental Education.Victor Biceaga - 2018 - The European Legacy 23 (4):382-402.
Flaubert’s Sentimental Education, published in 1869, is a novel about thwarted desires. My essay looks at some pathologies of desire the novel’s protagonist, Frédéric Moreau, may be said to exemplify in order to bring into view the conditions that make desire satisfaction possible. I take the tribulations of the protagonist not as mere consequences of his personal flaws but as significant clues about the mechanics of desire in general. I discuss the ways in which the style and form of the (...)
