  1. Our Newspaper as Care: Narrative Approaches in Fanon’s Psychiatry Clinic.Nathalie Egalité - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Humanities:1-14.
This paper argues that the newspaper Notre Journal enshrined the importance of narrative in the revolutionary psychiatry of its founder and editor, Frantz Fanon. Anchoring my analysis in the interdisciplinarity of the medical humanities, I demonstrate how care at Hôpital Blida-Joinville in colonial Algeria was mediated by the written word. I examine Fanon’s physician writing and editorial texts detailing the use of narrative approaches in the clinic. As an object of care, Notre Journal’s promotion of psychic healing, social actions, and (...)

  • Historical empathy and medicine: Pathography and empathy in Sophocles’ Philoctetes.Vassiliki Kampourelli - 2022 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 25 (3):561-575.
The aim of this article is to explore the ways in which the engagement with Greek tragedy may contribute fruitfully to the unfolding of empathy in medical students and practitioners. To reappraise the general view that classical texts are remote from modern experience because of the long distance between the era they represent and today, I propose an approach to Greek tragedy viewed through the lens of historical empathy, and of the association between past situations and similar contemporary experiences, in (...)

  • From method to hermeneutics: which epistemological framework for narrative medicine?Camille Abettan - 2017 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 38 (3):179-193.
The past 10 years have seen considerable developments in the use of narrative in medicine, primarily through the emergence of the so-called narrative medicine. In this article, I question narrative medicine’s self-understanding and contend that one of the most prominent issues is its lack of a clear epistemological framework. Drawing from Gadamer’s work on hermeneutics, I first show that narrative medicine is deeply linked with the hermeneutical field of knowledge. Then I try to identify which claims can be legitimately expected (...)
