The aim of this article is to think the relationship between the search for reality or the truth with methodology, by asking some questions to different theoretical perspectives and by analyzing different answers given by the authors and theories. From the sociological theoretical perspective, it deals with two levels of thought with methodological implications. The first refers to the methodological implications arising from the search for reality or truth. The second, epistemological, refers to the theoretical and paradigmatic duality between subjective (...) capacity decisions against the constriction of the subjects by the structures. El objetivo de este artículo es pensar el nexo de la búsqueda de la realidad o de la verdad con la metodología, al plantear preguntas a diversas corrientes teóricas y analizar las respuestas de cada autor o corriente al respecto. Desde la perspectiva teórica sociológica, se abordan dos niveles de reflexión con implicaciones metodológicas. El primero, hace referencia a las implicaciones metodológicas derivadas de la búsqueda de la realidad o de la verdad. El segundo, de carácter epistemológico, hace referencia a la dualidad teórica y paradigmática existente entre la capacidad subjetiva de decisión frente a la constricción de los sujetos por parte de las estructuras. Although the link between epistemic and ontological aspects of social reality has always been a problematic issue for the social sciences, this debate loses centrality from the second half of the twentieth century. This article critically reviews the epistemic reasons for that loss, mainly in relation with "hard" constructivism, arguing for the need to return to the ontological debate about sociological foundations. At the same time, it presents a theoretical proposal: social ontology constitutes itself epistemically; that is, the question about (...) "the social" inevitably involves the question about beliefs that constitute it. But social reality is not exhausted in beliefs, since it requires a material component to exist. From this proposal, this paper makes an explicit defense for a realist approach in sociology. To do this, critically reviews John Searle’s social ontology and makes concretes contributions to sociological theory, emphasizing the importance of action, power and causal reciprocity between individual and society, to have a social ontology that shows the specificity of the social. Aun cuando la vinculación entre los aspectos epistémicos y ontológicos de la realidad social ha sido siempre un asunto problemático para las ciencias sociales, este debate pierde centralidad desde mediados del siglo XX. Este artículo revisa críticamente las razones epistémicas de esa pérdida de centralidad, principalmente en relación con el constructivismo "duro", argumentando la necesidad de retomar el debate ontológico acerca de los fundamentos de la disciplina sociológica, al mismo tiempo que plantea una propuesta teórica de elucidación: la ontología de lo social se constituye epistémicamente; vale decir, la pregunta acerca de qué es lo social implica inevitablemente la pregunta por las creencias que lo constituyen. No obstante, la realidad social no se agota en las creencias, puesto que requiere de un componente material para existir. Desde esa propuesta, en una segunda parte, el artículo defiende la necesidad de adoptar una postura realista en sociología. Para ello, revisa críticamente la propuesta de ontología social de Searle y realiza aportes concretos desde la teoría sociológica, concluyendo la importancia de la acción, del poder y de la reciprocidad causal entre individuo y sociedad, para contar con una ontología que dé cuenta de la especificidad propia de lo social. This article delineates the notion of conjectural artworks—that is, ways of thinking and explaining formal and relational phenomena by visual means—and presents an appraisal and review of the use of such visual ways in the work of Chilean biologists and philosophers Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. Particularly, the article focuses on their recurrent uses of Cellular Automaton, that is, discrete, locally interacting, rule-based mathematical models, as conjectural artworks for understanding the concepts of autopoiesis, structural coupling, cognition and enaction: (i.e. Protobio (...) and Bittorio). Additionally, the article proposes a new model of conjectural artwork based on an extension of cellular automaton: random Boolean networks namely, binary systems with variable local connections. Such model, as it is argued, is useful to connect the theoretical frameworks by Maturana and Varela, especially structural coupling and enaction, with other relevant fields such as biosemiotics’ Umwelt-research and cognitive landscapes in neurodynamics, and to advance and explore the concepts of structurally coupled categorization and generalization. El presente artículo propone algunas reflexiones sobre el tema del conocimiento, su construcción y las posibles implicaciones para la educación. Esta reflexión se hace desde el enfoque sistémico e integra conceptos como los de intersección, proceso, sistemas observados y observadores, autopoiesis, neguentropía, complejidad y diferenciación, que se vinculan con algunas nociones básicas de filosofía oriental, planteando la premisa de que el proceso de construir el conocimiento conduce a un incremento en el nivel de la conciencia, lo que en la tradición (...) más clásica se conoce como un sendero de iluminación. El presente texto tiene como propósito principal aportar una visión de la psicología con la integración de los conceptos de la teoría sistémica, la teoría de la complejidad y la teoría del apego. Inicia con algunas definiciones y conceptualizaciones aportadas por el enfoque sistémico como son: las nociones de sistema, su estructura, funcionamiento, evolución y los principios que lo rigen. Luego se abordan dos ideas de la teoría de la complejidad, que complementan el análisis realizado desde la teoría sistémica, para (...) terminar con los aportes de la teoría del apego, que favorecen una visión más compleja de la psicología y, en consecuencia del ser humano, contribuyendo a comprenderlo de mejor manera. The purpose of this paper is to offer a critical approach to the theory of autopoiesis in order to see how it challenges mainstream Darwinism. In the first part of the paper, I characterize Darwinism from the concepts of natural selection, heredity, reproduction, and evolution. This characterization is absolutely schematic, and I hope not controversial at all, since my aim is to provide a general background for the discussion of the rest of the paper. The second part presents the main (...) tenets of the theory of autopoiesis, also paying special attention to the concepts of natural selection, heredity, reproduction, and evolution. The third and final part considers some criticisms that have been directed against the theory and suggests some new ones. As I said, my intention is to offer a critical approach, so that I pretend to assess neither autopoiesis nor Darwinism. The assessment, it seems to me, would be a matter of scientific debate—not properly of philosophy. Therefore, given that my approach attempts to be a conceptual clarification, my contribution to the contemporary debate about Darwinism is twofold. On the one hand, I show that conceptually autopoiesis constitutes an important challenge to Darwinism, but on the other, I also show that some fundamental aspects of the theory appear to be both epistemologically and empirically problematic, which perhaps helps to understand why autopoiesis is not widely accepted in mainstream Darwinism.
