    We introduce combinatorial principles that characterize strong compactness and supercompactness for inaccessible cardinals but also make sense for successor cardinals. Their consistency is established from what is supposedly optimal. Utilizing the failure of a weak version of a square, we show that the best currently known lower bounds for the consistency strength of these principles can be applied.

    We analyze the notion of guessing model, a way to assign combinatorial properties to arbitrary regular cardinals. Guessing models can be used, in combination with inaccessibility, to characterize various large cardinal axioms, ranging from supercompactness to rank-to-rank embeddings. The majority of these large cardinal properties can be defined in terms of suitable elementary embeddings j:Vγ→Vλ.     We give some applications of mixed support forcing iterations to the topics of disjoint stationary sequences and internally approachable sets. In the first half of the paper we study the combinatorial content of the idea of a disjoint stationary sequence, including its relation to adding clubs by forcing, the approachability ideal, canonical structure, the proper forcing axiom, and properties related to internal approachability.   • Approachability at the Second Successor of a Singular Cardinal.Moti Gitik & John Krueger - 2009 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 74 (4):1211 - 1224.
    We prove that if μ is a regular cardinal and ℙ is a μ-centered forcing poset, then ℙ forces that $(I[\mu ^{ + + } ])^V $ generates I[µ⁺⁺] modulo clubs. Using this result, we construct models in which the approachability property fails at the successor of a singular cardinal. We also construct models in which the properties of being internally club and internally approachable are distinct for sets of size the successor of a singular cardinal.

    We extend the work of Fischer et al. [6] by presenting a method for controlling cardinal characteristics in the presence of a projective wellorder and 2ℵ0>ℵ2. This also answers a question of Harrington [9] by showing that the existence of a Δ31 wellorder of the reals is consistent with Martinʼs axiom and 2ℵ0=ℵ3.
