  1. Commitment to values: Examining the role of ethical and responsible business practices on short and long‐term value.Yiwen Gu, Greg Bell, Abdul A. Rasheed & Sri Beldona - 2024 - Business and Society Review 129 (1):96-129.
Firms are under increasing pressure from external forces to do what is right and behave ethically. However, we have only a limited understanding of how ethical and responsible business practices impact the value of the firm, both in the short and the long term. In this study, we examine 196 firms that were recognized as the world's most ethical firms from 20 countries over a 14-year span. Results show that ethical behavior may have little effect on a firm's profitability in (...)

  • Punishing Politeness: The Role of Language in Promoting Brand Trust.Aparna Sundar & Edita S. Cao - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 164 (1):39-60.
Morality is an abstract consideration, and language is an important regulator of abstract thought. In instances of moral ambiguity, individuals may pay particular attention to matters of interactional justice. Politeness in language has been linked to greater perceptions of social distance, which we contend is instrumental in regulating attitudes toward a brand. What insights and guidance can ethicists and ethical theory offer? This paper is a case study of an organization that has initiated such a transition. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has begun a turn toward the promotion of ethical principles and best practices by adding a “conceptual framework” to its existing Code of Professional (...)

  • Mindfulness, Moral Reasoning and Responsibility: Towards Virtue in Ethical Decision-Making.Cherise Small & Charlene Lew - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 169 (1):103-117.
Ethical decision-making is a multi-faceted phenomenon, and our understanding of ethics rests on diverse perspectives. While considering how leaders ought to act, scholars have created integrated models of moral reasoning processes that encompass diverse influences on ethical choice. With this, there has been a call to continually develop an understanding of the micro-level factors that determine moral decisions. Both rationalist, such as moral processing, and non-rationalist factors, such as virtue and humanity, shape ethical decision-making. Focusing on the role of moral (...)
