The history of the Parallelogram Rule for composing physical quantities, such as motions and forces, is marked by conceptual difficulties leading to false starts and halting progress. In particular, authors resisted the required assumption that the magnitude and the direction of a quantity can interact and are jointly necessary to represent the quantity. Consequently, the origins of the Rule cannot be traced to Pseudo-Aristotle or Stevin, as commonly held, but to Fermat, Hobbes, and subsequent developments in the latter part of (...) the seventeenth century. Resumen En este trabajo evaluamos el impacto que la adopción de la relatividad del movimiento tiene en la metafísica de Leibniz. En particular argumentamos que el abandono de la comprensión absolutista del mismo anula su noción juvenil de sustancia corpórea. En primer lugar analizamos cómo entiende Leibniz las nociones de cuerpo y movimiento en el periodo juvenil y defendemos que la comprensión absolutista de este último constituye una piedra angular en su primera concepción de la sustancia corpórea. En segundo lugar (...) exponemos los argumentos leibnizianos a favor de la relatividad del movimiento durante el período parisino y mostramos su repercusión en el concepto juvenil de sustancia corpórea.In this paper we evaluate the impact of Leibniz's defense of relativity of motion on his metaphysics. We argue that the abandonment of the absolutist position makes void his first notion of corporeal substance. First, we analyze Leibniz's conception of body and movement in his youth and explain how the assumption of absolute motion during these years plays a role in his notion of corporeal substance. Second, we examine his arguments in favor of relativity of motion during the Parisian period and show the repercussion on his first conception of the corporeal substance. (shrink)

According to a common reading of Thomas Hobbes, fear is the most philosophically important passion, responsible for the founding and sustaining of the commonwealth. I argue that this common reading is incorrect by focusing on the necessary and important role of hope in human action as well as in the founding and sustaining of the commonwealth. Life in the Hobbesian commonwealth, on the reading defended in this paper, is less fearful and more hopeful than scholars have noticed.

I offer an alternative account of the relationship of Hobbesian geometry to natural philosophy by arguing that mixed mathematics provided Hobbes with a model for thinking about it. In mixed mathematics, one may borrow causal principles from one science and use them in another science without there being a deductive relationship between those two sciences. Natural philosophy for Hobbes is mixed because an explanation may combine observations from experience (the ‘that’) with causal principles from geometry (the ‘why’). My argument shows (...) that Hobbesian natural philosophy relies upon suppositions that bodies plausibly behave according to these borrowed causal principles from geometry, acknowledging that bodies in the world may not actually behave this way. First, I consider Hobbes's relation to Aristotelian mixed mathematics and to Isaac Barrow's broadening of mixed mathematics in Mathematical Lectures (1683). I show that for Hobbes maker's knowledge from geometry provides the ‘why’ in mixed-mathematical explanations. Next, I examine two explanations from De corpore Part IV: (1) the explanation of sense in De corpore 25.1-2; and (2) the explanation of the swelling of parts of the body when they become warm in De corpore 27.3. In both explanations, I show Hobbes borrowing and citing geometrical principles and mixing these principles with appeals to experience. (shrink)

This thesis consists of several independent papers in population ethics. I begin in Chapter 1 by critiquing some well-known 'impossibility theorems', which purport to show there can be no intuitively satisfactory population axiology. I identify axiological vagueness as a promising way to escape or at least mitigate the effects of these theorems. In particular, in Chapter 2, I argue that certain of the impossibility theorems have little more dialectical force than sorites arguments do. From these negative arguments I move to (...) positive ones. In Chapter 3, I justify the use of a 'veil of ignorance', starting from three more basic normative principles. This leads to positive arguments for various kinds of utilitarianism - the best such arguments I know. But in general the implications of the veil depend on how one answers what I call 'the risky existential question': what is the value to an individual of a chance of non-existence? I chart out the main options, and raise some puzzles for non-comparativism, the view that life is incomparable to non-existence. Finally, in Chapter 4, I consider the consequences for population ethics of the idea that what is normatively relevant is not personal identity, but a degreed relation of psychological connectedness. In particular, I pursue a strategy based in population ethics for understanding the controversial 'time-relative interests' account of the badness of death. (shrink)

Kirjoitus tarkastelee kahta jännitteessä olevaa näkemystä mielestä, komputationalismia ja eksternalismia. Komputationalismin mukaan mielen toiminta on mahdollista kuvata yksikäsitteisistä askeleista muodostuvana laskentana. Eksternalismin mukaan mielen toimintaa ei ole kuitenkaan mahdollista ymmärtää ottamatta huomioon niitä merkitysrelaatioita, joita mielellä on maailmaan. Näiden kahden näkemyksen välillä on selvä jännite: eksternalismin korostamat merkitysrelaatiot eivät voi luonteensa vuoksi olla komputationaalisen kuvaukseen sisältyviä ominaisuuksia. Vertailemalla Jerry Fodorin ja René Descartesin näkemyksiä esitän, että mahdollisuudet komputationalismin ja eksternalismin yhteensovittamiseen riippuvat suuresti siitä, minkälaisen laajemman teoreettisen hierarkian osiksi komputationalismi ja (...) eksternalismi käsitetään. Kiinnitän huomiota myös siihen, että eksternalismin tueksi tavallisesti esitetty ajatuskoe, Hilary Putnamin nk. kaksoismaa-ajatuskoe, näyttää riippuvan huomattavasti arkisemmasta ajattelun ilmiöstä kuin on esitetty. Esitän Descartesin käsittävän teoreettisesti keskeisimmäksi tasoksi kognitiivisten relaatioiden tason, ja täten alistavan muut teoreettisen kuvauksen tasot mielestä näiden ensisijaisten suhteiden toteumiksi. Fodorilaisessa näkemyksessä komputationaalinen kuvaus nähdään ensisijaisena, jolloin ongelmallisesti muut kuvaukset joudutaan selittämään pikemmin tuon komputationaalisen kuvauksen laajennuksina. Tämän näkökulmaeron ymmärtäminen auttaa myös näkemään, miten Descartesin näkemys kykenee sovittamaan komputationalismin että eksternalismin osaksi yhtä näkemystä. Kiinnitän huomiota erityisesti siihen, että mielen toiminnan ymmärtäminen yksityiskohtaisen mekaniikan tai laajojen relaatioiden tasolla on välttämättä riippuvaista siitä laajemmasta teoreettista viitekehyksestä, joka meillä ajattelun luonteesta on. Los estudios recientes sobre Hobbes han puesto una gran atención en el uso de las imágenes. Permanece, sin embargo, una objeción seria y factible: se podría argumentar que Hobbes no relaciona su producción de imágenes, ni a su política, ni a su teoría de la percepción y que, por tanto, no tenemos razón para creer que sus imágenes son una aplicación de esta doctrina. El propósito de este trabajo es mostrar que Hobbes de hecho sí vincula — de un modo (...) implícito — la construcción de imágenes y su teoría psicológica al orden político. Primero, el artículo reconstruye la teoría hobbesiana de la percepción y sus implicaciones. Segundo, se muestra que el Leviathan establece encubiertamente el vínculo entre la teoría de las imágenes y las imágenes políticas, incluyendo, por consiguiente, las creadas por el propio Hobbes. Tercero, se muestra que el Leviatán de Hobbes rara vez descubre su rol como dispositivo para ver, para hacer que el lector vea imágenes que él considera necesarias. Finalmente, se discuten las consecuencias de este descubrimiento para nuestra comprensión de Hobbes y de la visualidad y las imágenes en el pensamiento político. (shrink)
