It has long been noted that towards the end of the sixteenth century the Catholic Church began to use its instruments of censorship – the Inquisition and the Index of Forbidden Books – to prosecute magic with increased vigour. These developments are often deemed to have had important consequences for the development of modern science in Italy, for they delimited areas of legitimate investigation of the natural world. Previous accounts of the censorship of magic have tended to suggest that the (...) Church as an institution was opposed to, and sought to eradicate, the practice of magic. I do not seek to contest the fact that ecclesiastical censors prosecuted various magical and divinatory practices with greater enthusiasm at this time, but I suggest that in order to understand this development more fully it is necessary to offer a more complex picture of the Church. In this article I use the case of the Neapolitan magus Giambattista Della Porta to argue that during the course of the century the acceptable boundaries of magical speculation became increasingly clearly defined. Consequently, many practices and techniques that had previously been of contested orthodoxy were categorically defined as heterodox and therefore liable to prosecution and censorship. I argue, however, that this development was not driven by the Church asserting a ‘traditional’ hostility towards magic, but was instead the result of one particular faction within the Church embedding their conception of orthodox philosophical investigation of the natural world within the machinery of censorship. Hegemonic practices of memorialization rely on narratives of heroic, morally untainted resistance, which cast traitors as the aberrant “other.” This paper draws on Simone de Beauvoir’s The Ethics of Ambiguity and historical and sociological accounts of betrayal to trouble this binary and construct a framework for memorializing betrayal in its ambiguity—in relation to the everyday reality of tragic dilemmas that resisters face. I show how attentiveness to the ambiguity of betrayal can help rethink heroic resistance myths beyond the exclusionary logic (...) pitting moral purity against the depravity of treason—and warn against the reproduction of systematic practices of othering in the new political order. The paper develops the political relevance of this theoretical exploration via the example of a South African novel, The Texture of Shadows, examining how its insights into the ambiguity of betrayal challenge the myths of heroic resistance in South Africa. The Plotinus’ treaty of En. III 8 shows by a personification how the contemplative form of natural production is: an activity like a dream state because it concerns a quiet and restful vision, although imprecise in some ways. This paper focus on some topics that interpret this dreamy behavior of Nature according to its own generative interiority, instead of his difference from wakefulness. As the subject asleep extracted from himself the warp of sleep, the same happens with Nature, as their (...) images do not come from any extrinsic data but from its very productive capacity. I conclude that Plotinus does not oppose the sensible world, but rather he understand it as a reflected expression of intelligible world. El tratado plotiniano de En. III 8 manifiesta mediante una prosopopeya cómo es la índole contemplativa de la producción natural, conviene a saber, una actividad semejante al ensueño puesto que se trata de un ver silencioso y reposado, pero un tanto desvaído. El propósito de este trabajo consiste en dilucidar qué significado posible encierra esta mención de lo onírico a propósito de la contemplación de la phýsis. En relación con ello, un aspecto significativo atribuido al sueño atañe a la interioridad implicada en la representación fantástica del durmiente. Así como el sujeto dormido extrae desde sí mismo la urdimbre del sueño, así también ocurriría en el caso de la Naturaleza, por el hecho de que sus imágenes no proceden de ningún dato extrínseco a ella sino de su misma capacidad productiva. La reconstrucción de este tópico permite mostrar, entre otros aportes plausibles, que lo sensible en Plotino, lejos de tener un estatuto envilecido frente al mundo inteligible, constituye en cambio su expresión refleja. En el contexto de su crítica a la fenomenomenología husserliana Michel Henry apela a la caracterización de los errores de la perspectiva hetero-afectiva remitiéndose a sus orígenes en la tradición sintetizados en los parámetros de la “gnosis griega” y su compromiso con la racionalidad entendida como comprensión de “objetos puestos a distancia”. La revisión de los alcances de esta categoría revela, sin embargo, que existen tratamientos en el pensamiento griego que apelan a la auto-afección y la inmanencia para dar cuenta (...) de elementos que exceden la dimensión ek-stática. En este trabajo se revisa el planteo henryano para mostrar sus puntos de contacto con el estoicismo, especialmente a partir de la teoría de Hierocles a propósito de la oikeîosis. Este recorrido permitirá sugerir que entre ambos planteos existe una compatibilidad estructural que hace posible apelar a claves de interpretación similares para dar cuenta de la convivencia de mecanismos de explicación que apelan a lo auto-afectivo y lo hétero-afectivo en un conjunto coherente. Through a detailed analysis of the various modes of argumentation employed by Aristotle throughout his natural scientific works, I aim to contribute to the growing scholarship on the relation between Aristotle’s theory of science and his actual scientific practice. I challenge the standard reading of Aristotle as a methodological empiricist and show that he permits a variety of non-empirical arguments to support controversial theses in properly scientific contexts. Specifically, I examine his use of logical (logikôs) argumentation in the discussion of (...) mule sterility in Generation of Animals II 8, rational (kata ton logon) argumentation in his discussion of cardiocentrism throughout the biological works, and the method of division in Posterior Analytics II 13. El presente trabajo consiste en un examen crítico de la Quinta Meditación Cartesiana de E. Husserl, en donde el filósofo aborda el problema de la constitución intersubjetiva del mundo. Aquí se recorre la estructura argumentativa de Husserl en vista a problematizarla, a partir de una doble toma de distancia: por un lado, del idealismo trascendental —el enfoque por el que se define la fenomenología husserliana— respecto de las configuraciones conceptuales que se hallan en el texto; y, por otro, del grueso (...) de la tradición fenomenológica — representada, en esta oportunidad, por los aportes y revisiones a la temática de P. Ricoeur y M. Henry— respecto a dicho enfoque. (shrink)

Afin d’introduire notre propos, nous souhaiterons d’abord insister sur deux des avancées herméneutiques fondamentales qu’ont à nos yeux rendues possibles le travail mené depuis 2010 au Fonds Michel Henry de l’université de Louvain-la- Neuve. La première concerne la question de l’expérience d’autrui. Sur la foi des textes publiés en effet, la littérature secondaire avait pris l’habitude de considérer qu’elle n’avait été posée par Henry que tardivement—une première fois au début des années 1990, avec les deux articles que lui consacre Phénoménologie (...) matérielle, prolongés par la rédaction immédiatement abandonné, en 1991, d’un livre qu’il projetait d’intituler “Intersubjectivité pathétique;” une seconde fois lors du changement de paradigme qui allait le conduire à sa “philosophie du christianisme,” et dans lequel il se trouve repensé dans un tout autre cadre conceptuel que celui de la phénoménologie historique. Or une première exploration des archives henryennes, dont nous avons eu le privilège de publier les résultats dans le deuxième numéro de la Revue Internationale Michel Henry, montre que le problème de l’expérience d’autrui hanta Henry tout du long de sa vie et, surtout, dès le début de son itinéraire philosophique—au point d’ailleurs, comme en témoigne son dossier CNRS, qu’il envisagea de lui consacrer sa thèse secondaire jusqu’en 1950. La seconde avancée herméneutique permise par ce travail archivistique et qui nous retiendra ici concerne la place qu’occupe dans la pensée henryenne la figure de Sartre: si, dans Philosophie et phénoménologie du corps et dans L’essence de la manifestation, il est loin de faire figure d’interlocuteur privilégié, et si, sur la foi d’une déclaration lapidaire de Michel Henry lui-même avouant dans un entretien tardif le tenir pour un “auteur secondaire,” la littérature critique a eu tendance à en négliger l’importance dans la genèse de la “philosophie de la vie,” force est au contraire de constater l’omniprésence de Sartre dans l’immense chantier des notes préparatoires aux deux premières oeuvres henryennes. Et plus précisément, il est désormais établi que la thèse d’une “transcendance de l’ego”—du mien comme de celui d’autrui – circonscrit alors pour Henry la position philosophique fondamentale contre laquelle il cherche à exprimer ses propres intuitions fondatrices: non seulement celle, explicitement développée dans L’essence de la manifestation, d’un ego immanent seul capable, à ses yeux, de redonner un sens phénoménologique à l’idée d’intériorité, mais aussi celle, qui nous retiendra ici tout particulièrement, d’une expérience immanente de la subjectivité immanente de l’autre—expérience que Henry nomme alors, dans une formule qui restera un hapax, une “expérience métaphysique d’autrui.”.
