The paper analyses Schelling and Schopenhauer’s conflicting views on intuition within the context of German classical philosophy and provides an interpretation of their differences. Moreover, the paper intends to fill a gap in the literature, by explaining how Schopenhauer grounded intuition in aesthetics and ethics on feelings and mysticism. After the Introduction, Section 2 summarizes Kant’s epistemology and its role in the subsequent discussions on intuition, and Sections 3 and 4 focus on Schelling’s intellectual intuition and Schopenhauer’s account of different (...) kinds of intuition. Sections 5 and 6 analyse how Schopenhauer argued that feelings and mysticism explain metaphysical insights in aesthetics and ethics. Section 7 sums up the main contributions of this paper through a comparative overview of Schelling and Schopenhauer’s respective accounts of intuition. (shrink)

This paper defends an interpretation of the representational function of sensation in Kant's theory of empirical cognition. Against those who argue that sensations are ?subjective representations? and hence can only represent the sensory state of the subject, I argue that Kant appeals to different notions of subjectivity, and that the subjectivity of sensations is consistent with sensations representing external, spatial objects. Against those who claim that sensations cannot be representational at all, because sensations are not cognitively sophisticated enough to possess (...) intentionality, I argue that Kant does not use the term ?Vorstellung? to refer to intentional mental states exclusively. Sensations do not possess their own intentionality, but they nevertheless perform a representational function in virtue of their role as the matter of empirical intuition. In empirical intuition, the sensory qualities given in sensation are combined with the representation of space to constitute the intuited appearance. The representational function of sensation consists in sensation being the medium out of which intuited appearances are constituted: the qualities of sensations stand in for what the understanding will judge (conceptualize) as material substance. Bolzano followed him in terminology, but not in substance. This essay deals with Bolzano’s astute and detailed critique of Kant, and then outlines his own theory. His famous propositions « in themselves », allowed him to discuss, with precision, the concepts of logical consequence, equivalence, analyticity, etc., and to escape from common logical psychologism. Intuitions are an exception. They are introduced with heavy reliance on mental activity and are thought — they are episodes representing our direct empirical awareness — and they indeed constitute the narrow door of Bolzano’s philosophy of mind. The role and place of transcendental psychology in Kant's Critique of Pure Reason has been a source of some contention. This work presents a detailed argument for restoring transcendental psychology to a central place in the interpretation of Kant's Analytic, in the process providing a detailed response to more "austere" analytic readings.

This paper analyses the features of Kant’s transcendental philosophy, which Kant himself described as transcendental idealism. On the one hand, Kant’s transcendentalism rests on the distinction between things in themselves and appearances. On the other hand, our ‘mode of cognition’ [Critique, B25] cognition is representative in that is based on representations — subjective and objective ones. A synthesis of the above considerations suggests that Kant’s transcendentalism rests on the conceptual triad “[objective] object — appearance — and [mental] representation “. Kant’s (...) transcendentalism is impossible without the ‘premise’ of appearance. The correct interpretation of Kant’s transcendental philosophy should keep the double difference of appearance both from thing–in–itself and representation. In this transcendental triad, the Kantian appearance has an intermediate status since it is located between objective things and subjective representations. However, the conceptual status of the appearance needs to be clarified, since Kant himself does not give a clear answer to this question, and at present there are several interpretations, differing primarily in the definition of the concept of the appearance. For me, appearance can be correlated with objective–objectual representation. It would be unwise to identify appearance with thing in itself, which was characteristic of pre–Kantian philosophy, or appearance with representation, which was the case in phenomenalist interpretations of transcendental idealism à la Berkley. The Kantian appearance, as emphasised in BXXVII of his Critique, is an appearance of an object, which — although implicitly — suggests a semantic relationship of reference. In this case, the appearance is not an object, but just ‘a designation of an object’ [Critique, B235]. Appearance is impossible without what appears in it. This paper puts forward a number of arguments in favour of the objectual status of Kant’s concept of appearance. (shrink)
