  1. Forgive our presumption: a difficult reading of Matthew 23:1-3.Jonathan D. Stuckert - 2018 - Perichoresis 16 (3):3-15.
In Matthew 23:1-3, Jesus commands His disciples and the crowd to listen to the scribes and Pharisees even while not imitating their actions. Many modern interpreters have lessened the force of Matthew 23:1-3 by an assumption of irony on the part of Jesus. We presume that God could never ordain this for His people. However, this easier reading may not be the best reading. A more straightforward interpretation, but one that is difficult to hear, suggests that at times we may (...)

  • Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem.Juho Sankamo - 2014 - Approaching Religion 4 (2):25-36.
This article intends to contribute to the understanding of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The author studies the entry, which is found in all the Gospels, in its Jewish context. The author argues that Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on an ass is to be understood as a prophetic sign which was primarily meant to convey a message to the Jews.

  • Forgiveness and politics: Reading Matthew 18:21–35 with survivors of armed conflict in Colombia.Robert W. Heimburger, Christopher M. Hays & Guillermo Mejía-Castillo - 2019 - HTS Theological Studies 75 (4):1-9.
After decades of armed conflict in Colombia, how do those most affected by that conflict understand forgiveness? While others have researched Colombians’ views of forgiveness, this study is the first to do so through discussion of a narrative of forgiveness. Readings of the biblical narrative chosen for this study, the Parable of the Unforgiving Debtor, can enable North Atlantic scholars to discover dimensions of the parable revealed by those who live lives that mirror the realities of the parable, unlike such (...)

  • The star of Christ in the light of astronomy.Aaron Adair - 2012 - Zygon 47 (1):7-29.
Abstract Centuries of both theologians and astronomers have wondered what the Star of Bethlehem (Matt 2:2, 9) actually was, from miracle to planetary conjunction. Here a history of this search is presented, along with the difficulties the various proposals have had. The natural theories of the Star are found to be a recent innovation, and now almost exclusively maintained by scientists rather than theologians. Current problems with various theories are recognized, as well as general problems with the approach. The interactions (...)
