  1. A Hobbesian Argument for World Government.Henrik Skaug Sætra - 2022 - Philosophies 7 (3):66.
The legitimacy of government is often linked to its ability to maintain order and secure peace. Thomas Hobbes’ political philosophy provides a clear description of why government is necessary, as human nature and the structures emerging out of human social interaction are such that order and peace will not naturally emerge to a sufficient degree. Hobbes’ general argument is often accepted at the national level, but in this article, I explore why a Hobbesian argument for the international level—an argument for (...)

  • The Treachery of Images in the Digital Sovereignty Debate.Jukka Ruohonen - 2021 - Minds and Machines 31 (3):439-456.
This short theoretical and argumentative essay contributes to the ongoing deliberation about the so-called digitalfug sovereignty, as pursued particularly in the European Union. Drawing from classical political science literature, the essay approaches the debate through paradoxes that arise from applying classical notions of sovereignty to the digital domain.

  • David Mitrany on the international anarchy. A lost work of classical realism?Lucian M. Ashworth - 2017 - Journal of International Political Theory 13 (3):311-324.
Although David Mitrany’s international thought is not usually associated with the concept of the international anarchy, I argue that his analysis actually compares two forms of anarchical order. The first form is the order associated with the relations between states, while the second is his functional alternative to this order. The functional approach is anarchical in the sense that it remains an order without an orderer. In first analysing the dynamics and failings of the inter-state order, and then suggesting pragmatic (...)
