  • Scientific-theoretical research approach to practical theology in South Africa: A contemporary overview.Hennie J. C. Pieterse - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (4):1-9.
In this article, I present a critical literature study of the theoretical approach of practical theologians in South Africa to our discipline, in honour of Yolanda Dreyer on her 60th birthday. Some of my colleagues' approaches at the universities of Stellenbosch, Free State, Pretoria, Unisa and NWU are discussed. All of them work with practical theological hermeneutics. The basic hermeneutic approach of Daniël Louw is widened with an integrated approach by Richard R. Osmer in which practical theology as a hermeneutic (...)

  • Practical-theological facilitation as skilled helping.Elmo Pienaar - 2013 - HTS Theological Studies 69 (2):01-09.
The article discussed the idea of skilled helping in relation to what has been put forward as practical theological facilitation. It has been argued that various helping relationships, amongst which the author refers to coaching, facilitation, and therapy has more in common than what differentiates them if epistemology is viewed as a unifying concept. As such the scope of practical theology in terms of the contexts and themes in which it might be involved is said to widen. The public dimension (...)

  • Towards Professional Wisdom in Parish Ministry.Richard Impey - 2009 - Ethics and Social Welfare 3 (2):181-194.
This paper argues that a key feature of the wisdom of a professional minister involves respecting and working with the practical wisdom of the congregation. Using five key aspects of local church life, the congregation's way of doing things is contrasted with the acquired habits and pattern of working of the minister. Between them there exists the potential for a common approach, a fruitful tension or a serious likelihood of mutual misunderstanding. This is related particularly to the ethics involved in (...)

  • Psychology, religion, and critical hermeneutics: Don Browning as “horizon analyst”.Terry D. Cooper - 2011 - Zygon 46 (3):686-697.
Abstract. Don Browning's career involved a deep exploration into the frequently hidden philosophical assumptions buried in various forms of psychotherapeutic healing. These healing methodologies were based on metaphors and metaphysical assumptions about both the meaning of human fulfillment and the ultimate context of our lives. All too easily, psychological theories put forward philosophical anthropologies while claiming to be operating within a modest, empirical approach. Browning does not fault or criticize these psychotherapeutic enterprises for making such claims because he thinks these (...)

  • A Neuro Linguistic Programming’s modelling process for the development of and guidance to congregations: An adaptive ministry.Johan Bester & Johann A. Meylahn - 2019 - HTS Theological Studies 75 (4):1-8.
Several congregations in the workspace of the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa are losing viability and sustainability. This can be attributed to various factors, the most prominent being isolation. Isolation is defined here as the inability of some congregations to move away from maintenance and an inward focus towards making necessary adjustments on the way to a dimension of missional focus. While commitment and enthusiasm are present in the work of all congregations, some find it difficult to adapt their established (...)

  • Middle-career development through spiritual lifestyle coaching: Preliminary theoretical perspectives.Madelein C. Fourie & Jan Albert van den Berg - 2013 - HTS Theological Studies 69 (2):1-9.
This study bases itself in the epistemological and methodological development of a broad and interdisciplinary dialogue where various voices in the form of different domains converse in order to establish an integrated whole. The research contributes to the actual corporative question regarding spirituality in the workplace, specifically aimed at the individual in the middle-career phase. This phase is characterised as a re-evaluation period aimed at personal and professional growth. A shift in emphasis to the meaning and sense of work is (...)
