    As far as the subject of this paper is concerned, early medieval grammarians started with the definition of a sentence — oratio — proposed by Priscian : Oratio est ordinatio dictionum congrua perfectam sententiam demonstrans. A sentence is a congruous ordering of words which expresses a complete thought.
