  1. The World and Its Nightmare (Levinas on Sense and Nonsense).Daniela Matysová - 2023 - Human Studies 46 (1):79-99.
This text deals with the interpretation of where the meaningfulness of existence and our being in the world in Emmanuel Levinas’s conception originates in its contrast to the similar conception developed by phenomenology of appearing - which is represented by M. Heidegger and H. Maldiney. I want to show on what premises Levinas argues that the epiphany of sense can only emerge in the case of a continuous overcoming of the nonsense of appearing and thus of Being as such. Therefore, (...)

  • The Passage and Happening of Time in Levinas’s Otherwise than Being.Mérédith Laferté-Coutu - 2019 - Levinas Studies 13:175-190.
What can the passage of time mean for Levinas? Is there a passage of diachronic time? In its many iterations, passage—an expression that easily goes unnoticed, for it is ordinary, perhaps self-evident, yet almost pervasive in the French language—turns out to be at play throughout Levinas’s last major work. This paper traces the role of the notion in Otherwise than Being and shows its stakes for the remarkably numerous topics that it connects: Levinas’s critique of Husserlian temporality, the relation between (...)

  • Riveted : Levinas' Early Stuff.Aron Ericson - unknown
This study is an examination of the early philosophical writings by Emmanuel Levinas, and shows how transcendence became his guiding question. The study has three parts. Part One lays out Levinas' early enthusiasm with regard to Heidegger's phenomenology. Part Two consists of close readings of three essays by Levinas from 1933 to 1935. It traces the shift in Levinas' relation to Heideggerian philosophy, a shift that may have been motivated by Heidegger's political commitments, but which was thought through philosophically. The (...)
