La présente étude suggère que l’analyse aristotélicienne de la sōphrosunē dans l’ Éthique à Nicomaque II 7 et surtout III 13-15 (ou : III x-xii) gagne à être comprise sous l’angle de son héritage platonicien et, en particulier, de l’examen de la conception de la sōphrosunē comme « science de la science » défendue par Critias dans le Charmide et de la définition de la sōphrosunē en termes de tripartition de la cité et de l’âme dans la République. La première (...) partie présente les objections soulevées par Socrate contre la notion de la sōphrosunē comme science réflexive défendue par Critias dans le Charmide, et suggère comment Aristote pourrait avoir pris ces objections en compte. La deuxième partie discute quelques caractéristiques choisies de la sōphrosunē en République IV et soutient que cette dernière conception s’éloigne du Charmide mais se rapproche de la conception aristotélicienne de cette vertu. La troisième partie positionne la conception aristotélicienne de la sōphrosunē d’une part relativement à sa conception des vertus de caractère et de sa propre méthode d’analyse et d’autre part relativement à ces deux dialogues de Platon. En conclusion, la présente étude identifie des différences cruciales entre les traitements platonicien et aristotélicien de la sōphrosunē et indique comment Aristote tient compte des arguments de Platon tout en se distanciant suffisamment de son aîné pour offrir sa propre analyse distinctive de cette vertu spécifique. The kind of self-knowledge at issue in the eye-soul analogy of the Alcibiades is knowledge of one’s epistemic state, i.e. what one knows and does not know, rather than knowledge of what one is. My evidence for this is the connection between knowledge of one’s epistemic state and self-improvement, the equivalence of self-knowledge to moderation, and the fact that ‘looking’ into the soul of another is a metaphor for elenctic discussion. The final lines of the analogy clarify that the part (...) of the soul one ‘looks’ into and the part one learns about when learning about one’s epistemic state is divine. (shrink)

This chapter explores the topic of self-knowledge in ancient thought, asking in particular what the ancient concept (or concepts) of knowing oneself amounts to. The chapter begins by contrasting the issues which occupy ancient and contemporary discussions of self-knowledge, and the obvious points of continuity and discontinuity between the two. The author isolates two forms of self-knowledge: cognitive self-knowledge or knowledge of one’s own mental states, and dispositional self-knowledge or knowledge of one’s moral or intellectual dispositions, and traces the treatment (...) of these forms of self-knowledge in the works of Plato, Aristotle, Hellenistic philosophers, and Plotinus. In the course of discussing the texts of each thinker or school, and the relevant scholarship, this chapter also canvasses the ways in which the chapters in the rest of this volume seek to engage with some of the problems or issues that have emerged.
