  • The Arithmetics of a Theory.Albert Visser - 2015 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 56 (1):81-119.
In this paper we study the interpretations of a weak arithmetic, like Buss’s theory $\mathsf{S}^{1}_{2}$, in a given theory $U$. We call these interpretations the arithmetics of $U$. We develop the basics of the structure of the arithmetics of $U$. We study the provability logic of $U$ from the standpoint of the framework of the arithmetics of $U$. Finally, we provide a deeper study of the arithmetics of a finitely axiomatized sequential theory.

The provability logic of a theory $T$ is the set of modal formulas, which under any arithmetical realization are provable in $T$. We slightly modify this notion by requiring the arithmetical realizations to come from a specified set $\Gamma$. We make an analogous modification for interpretability logics. We first study provability logics with restricted realizations and show that for various natural candidates of $T$ and restriction set $\Gamma$, the result is the logic of linear frames. However, for the theory Primitive (...)

  • A Mathematical Commitment Without Computational Strength.Anton Freund - 2022 - Review of Symbolic Logic 15 (4):880-906.
We present a new manifestation of Gödel’s second incompleteness theorem and discuss its foundational significance, in particular with respect to Hilbert’s program. Specifically, we consider a proper extension of Peano arithmetic ( $\mathbf {PA}$ ) by a mathematically meaningful axiom scheme that consists of $\Sigma ^0_2$ -sentences. These sentences assert that each computably enumerable ( $\Sigma ^0_1$ -definable without parameters) property of finite binary trees has a finite basis. Since this fact entails the existence of polynomial time algorithms, it is (...)

  • Weak forms of the Regularity Principle in the presence of equation image.Charalampos Cornaros - 2013 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 59 (1-2):84-100.
We study the strength of weak forms of the Regularity Principle in the presence of equation image relative to other subsystems of equation image. In particular, the Bounded Weak Regularity Principle is formulated, and it is shown that when applied to E1 formulas, this principle is equivalent over equation image to equation image.
