For the first time in Fichte scholarship, Traub offers an account of the influence of pietistic ideas on Fichte’s philosophy and his academic and political self-image. Evidence of this is, for example, Fichte’s personalisation and popularisation of the knowledge of faith, the culture of internal moral theological and rational self-examination, or the primacy of »praxis pietatis«. The analysis focuses on the little investigated denominational aspects of Fichte’s early education: in his family and upbringing, in school and university. Especially with Fichte’s (...) early work on Dogmatics and Christology, Traub proves that Fichte’s theology and philosophy had – far before reading Kant – a firm denominational orientation that must be taken into account for any appropriate understanding of his later philosophy. -/- . ›Bottom-up‹ und ›top-down‹ sind heutzutage gängige Methodenbezeichnungen in allen Bereichen der Wissenschaft. Dennoch sind beide Methoden keine Entdeckung der Moderne, sondern wurden unter Begriffen wie beispielsweise ›Auf-‹ und ›Abstieg‹, ›Induktion‹ und ›Deduktion‹ in der Wissenschaftsgeschichte häufig verwendet, um komplexe Wissensbestände vollständig aufzuarbeiten und zu strukturieren. Paradigmatisch für eine derartige Aufarbeitung stehen die mittelalterliche Summa und das neuzeitliche System. Aktuellen Studien zufolge hat aber bereits Dionysius Areopagita in der Spätantike eine derartige Summe verfasst, während in der Neuzeit erst J. G. Fichtes (...) Wissenschaftslehre (1804) allen Systemansprüchen genügen konnte. Daher beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Studie mit den Auf- und Abstiegsmethoden bei Dionysius und Fichte, ihrer antiken Vorgeschichte und kontrastiert ihre Methoden mit der aktuellen Wissenschaftsphilosophie. Dabei zeigt sich, dass beide Autoren bei der Aufstiegs- bzw. bottom-up-Methode bislang unberücksichtigte Strategien zur Lösung des Induktionsproblems anwenden. (shrink)

In 1817 a discussion between the mineralogist Ch.S. Weiß and the classical philologist A. Böckh took place at the newly founded University of Berlin: Weiß accused I.H. Fichte, son of the philosopher J.G. Fichte, of submitting a manuscript of his deceased father to the university as dissertation. Böckh took sides with Fichte-junior, refuting Weiß’ accusation in a procedure of taking evidence related to the form and content of the manuscript. In this paper I compare the dissertation with the philosophy of (...) J.G. Fichte. Firstly, the methodological procedure used in the dissertation is different to that in Fichte-senior’s philosophy, proving amongst others that the manuscript wasn’t written by him. Secondly, in this comparison a change in the history of university philosophy comes to light exemplarily that is still taking effect today. Philosophy changed from a system science to a research science, in which the history of philosophy gained a new meaning for philosophising itself. (shrink)

The older topos ›historia magistra vitae‹ – which was coined by Cicero, borrowing from a Hellenistic pattern – lasted almost unbroken into the eighteenth century, also thanks to its flexibility in accommodating the most different conclusions. As demonstrated by R. Koselleck, the common place was emptied of meaning just between the eighteenth and nineteenth century, at the same time and in connection with the invisible and sudden semantic process, through which in the German language area the naturalized foreign world Historie (...) and the plural ›die Geschichten‹ were displaced by the collective singular ›die Geschichte‹. This paper aims to frame Fichte’s position in the process of dissolution of the topos, described by Koselleck. For this purpose, the paper will be articulated in the following steps. Firstly, it reconstructs the most important and probable filters, through which Fichte has received Cicero’s topos. The second part will examine deeply the criticisms that Fichte moves to the different versions of the formula, during his whole speculative itinerary. Finally, the conclusive part considers how Fichte recovers and reworks the topos – since his first works – by transposing it in the completely different theoretical frame of his own philosophy of history and of his theory of the State.Die Wendung ›historia magistra vitae‹ – die in Anlehnung an hellenistische Vorbilder von Cicero geprägt wurde – währte fast ungebrochen bis in das achtzehnte Jahrhundert, wobei eine solche Dauerhaftigkeit auch und zunächst auf seiner Elastizität beruhte, die die unterschiedlichsten Schlüsse zuließ. Wie R. Koselleck gezeigt hat, wird die Formel lediglich zwischen dem achtzehnten und dem neunzehnten Jahrhundert – gleichzeitig und parallel mit dem unmerklichen und unbewussten Vorgang, der im deutschen Sprachgebiet die Pluralform von ›die Geschichte‹ zu einem Kollektivsingular verdichtet hat – sinnentleert. Der vorliegende Beitrag geht darauf aus, Fichtes eigentümliche Stellung in dieser Auflösung des alten Topos zu verdeutlichen. Dazu untersucht man zuerst die Quelle, die Fichtes Rezeption des Topos ermöglichen und vermitteln. Im zweiten Teil betrachtet man alle Stelle tiefgehend, wo Fichte im Lauf seiner ganzen philosophischen Untersuchung an den Topos kritisch aufweist. Am Schluss wird die radikale neue Auslegung illustriert, die Fichte auf Grund seiner Philosophie der Geschichte und seiner Auffassung der Staatslehre anbietet. (shrink)

The article deals with the relationship between morality and religion in Kant’s and Fichte’s thought. These two spheres are carefully distinguished by Kant: the knowledge of moral law as genuine conviction has a completely different status than religious faith, and the certainty of faith is just a “moral” certainty, which derives from a need. In the years of Jena Fichte stresses the immediate, active dimension of conviction, which characterizes also the conscience. In the writings of the dispute concerning atheism this (...) conviction of the conscience implies the absolute certainty of the faith: the voice of the conscience is identified with faith.Der Aufsatz behandelt die Beziehung zwischen Moralität und Religion im Denken Kants und Fichtes. Diese zwei Sphären werden von Kant mit Aufmerksamkeit unterschieden: das Wissen des Moralgesetzes als eigentliche Überzeugung hat einen ganz anderen Status als das Glauben der Religion, und die Gewissheit des Glaubens ist eine nur „moralische“ Gewissheit, die aus einem Bedürfnis entsteht. In der Jenaer Zeit betont Fichte die unmittelbare, tätige Seite der Überzeugung, die auch das Gewissen kennzeichnet. In den Schriften des Atheismusstreit bringt diese Überzeugung des Gewissens die absolute Gewissheit des Glaubens mit sich: die Stimme des Gewissens wird mit dem Glauben identifiziert. (shrink)

J. G. Fichte (1762–1814) articulates and defends a conception of autonomy as rational self-identification. This paper reconstructs this conception and examines various difficulties recognized by Fichte during the earliest phases of his career (1780s–1790s), with the heterogeneity of natural drives and freedom as the principal threat. Theoretically, this heterogeneity is overcome for Fichte by his deduction of the compound nature of humanity as a condition of rational agency. But, from the standpoint of the deliberating agent herself, this deduction is not (...) sufficient. The harmony of nature and freedom is, for Fichte, a desideratum of practical rationality, and so must be addressed as such. Fichte's argument at this point is that a further perspective on oneself must be at least implicit in the moral outlook of a deliberating agent in order for this harmony to be attained on a practical level. This is because the harmony that is achieved at the deliberative level is occasional, temporary, and fundamentally uncertain. The required perspective turns out to be religious faith, the idea that the ‘infinite task’ of morality is eternally realized in divine reason, or that there is a ‘moral world order’ in which nature and freedom are reconciled. This paper aims at criticizing a dominant approach adopted in order to studying the relationship between Fichte and Rousseau. It concerns the tendency to reduce their relationship to the critic that Fichte delivered to Rousseau in the famous fifth lesson of Vocation of the scholar in 1794, and to transform it into its key of exhaustive reading. In our opinion, this hermeneutic approach produces some significant effects of misunderstanding of this problem, for instance the tendency to underline the features of (...) Fichte’s break with the philosophy of the 18th century. The main goal of this contribution is then to understand that critics by the presentation of the strategic challenges of this conference, and thus to show the complexity of Rousseau’s influence on Fichte for the elaboration of his own philosophy in particular for the Vocation of the scholar in 1794.Le but de cet article est de problématiser une approche dominante dans la façon de traiter le rapport entre Fichte et Rousseau. Il s’agit de la tendance à réduire ce rapport à la critique que Fichte livre à Rousseau dans la cinquième conférence de la Destination du savant de 1794 en le transformant en sa clé de lecture exhaustive. De cette approche herméneutique découlent à notre avis des effets significatifs de mésentente, parmi lesquels une emphatisation des traits de rupture de la philosophie de Fichte avec la philosophie du 18ème siècle. Proposant de lire la critique de Rousseau à partir des enjeux stratégiques de cette conférence cet article veut relativiser la portée scientifique de cette critique afin de dégager la richesse et la complexité de l’influence exercée par les différents écrits de Rousseau sur Fichte dans l’élaboration de sa propre philosophie et en particulier en 1794.
