  1. Sustainable Engineering Science for Resolving Wicked Problems.Thomas Seager, Evan Selinger & Arnim Wiek - 2012 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 25 (4):467-484.
Because wicked problems are beyond the scope of normal, industrial-age engineering science, sustainability problems will require reform of current engineering science and technology practices. We assert that, while pluralism concerning use of the term sustainability is likely to persist, universities should continue to cultivate research and education programs specifically devoted to sustainable engineering science, an enterprise that is formally demarcated from business-as-usual and systems optimization approaches. Advancing sustainable engineering science requires a shift in orientation away from reductionism and intellectual specialization (...)

  • Bias in Peer Review of Organic Farming Grant Applications.Jesper Rasmussen, Vibeke Langer & Hugo Fjelsted Alrøe - 2006 - Agriculture and Human Values 23 (2):181-188.
Peer reviews of 84 organic farming grant applications from Sweden were analyzed to determine whether the reviewers’ affiliation to one of two types of agriculture (i.e., organic and conventional) influenced their reviews. Fifteen reviewers were divided into three groups: (1) scientists with experience in organic farming research; (2) scientists with no experience in organic farming research; and (3) users of organic farming research. The two groups of scientists assessed the societal relevance and scientific quality of the grant applications based on (...)

  • Taboos in Corporate Social Responsibility Discourse.Tomi J. Kallio - 2007 - Journal of Business Ethics 74 (2):165-175.
Corporations today have been engineered by CEOs and other business advocates to look increasingly green and responsible. However, alarming cases such as Enron, Parmalat and Worldcom bear witness that a belief in corporate goodness is still nothing other than naïve. Although many scholars seemingly recognize this, they still avoid touching on the most sensitive and problematic issues, the taboos. As a consequence, discussion of important though problematic topics is often stifled. The article identifies three ‘grand’ taboos of CSR discourse and (...)
