  1. Jane Addams as experimental philosopher.Joshua August Skorburg - 2018 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 26 (5):918-938.
This paper argues that the activist, feminist and pragmatist Jane Addams was an experimental philosopher. To defend this claim, I argue for capacious notions of both philosophical pragmatism and experimental philosophy. I begin in Section 2 with a new defence of Rose and Danks’ [‘In Defense of a Broad Conception of Experimental Philosophy’. Metaphilosophy 44, no. 4 : 512–32] argument in favour of a broad conception of experimental philosophy. Koopman [‘Pragmatist Resources for Experimental Philosophy: Inquiry in Place of Intuition’. Journal (...)

  • Essaying America: A Declaration of Independence.John Lysaker - 2012 - Journal of Speculative Philosophy 26 (3):531-533.
American life storms about us daily, and is slow to find a tongue.Early in his Meditations, Descartes suggests that, at least once, one should set one's epistemic bushel in order, as if beliefs were apples to be sorted. But that is not quite right, even though he uses the image in his replies to the seventh set of objections. Descartes's principal concern is not each and every belief but the ways in which he justifies them. It is thus not a (...)

  • Perplexities of filiality: Confucius and Jane addams on the private/public distinction.Mathew A. Foust - 2008 - Asian Philosophy 18 (2):149 – 166.
This article compares the ways in which the classic Western philosophical division between the private and public spheres is challenged by an apparently disparate pair of thinkers—Confucius and Jane Addams. It is argued that insofar as the public and private distinction is that between the sphere of the family and that outside of the family, Confucius and Addams offer ways of rethinking that distinction. While Confucius endorses a porous relation between these realms, Addams advocates a relation that fosters reconstructive transformation (...)

  • Pragmatists, Deliberativists, and Democracy: The Quest for Inclusion.Clara Cecilia Fischer - 2012 - Journal of Speculative Philosophy 26 (3):497-515.
Similarities between pragmatist models of democracy and deliberative models have been explored over recent years, most notably in this journal ( Talisse 2004). However, the work of Iris Marion Young has, thus far, not figured in such comparative analyses and historical weighing of pragmatist antecedents in deliberativist work. In what follows, I wish to redress this oversight by placing Young in conversation with John Dewey and Jane Addams. Young's particular brand of deliberative theorizing focuses on the inclusion of women and (...)
