I argue that Metaphysicsλ is a unified work, and one which is not a continuation of the central books ΖΗΘ. It outlines an extensive project in First Philosophy, which has close connections with ΑΒΓΕ, but which proceeds on a different trajectory from ΖΗ. Averroes held the controversial thesis that there is only one separate material or possible intellect for all humans. This paper analyzes a passage from his Long Commentary on the De Anima which has been thought to constitute a primary philosophical argument for the view.
