In this paper, I offer a treatment of “the clinic” in which the clinic—as concept and space—is que(e)ried, that is, both questioned and made queer. I present two historical case studies that queer clinical thought and practices in the period before AIDS and before the full-blown arrival of queer theory on the western theoretical landscape. These two cases—the practice of self-help developed in the women’s health movement in the United States and the practice of tranversality developed out of and beyond (...)

  4. Institutional Schizophasia and the Possibility of the Humanities' 'Other Scene': Guattari and the Exigency of Transversality.Michael Eng - 2012 - Deleuze and Guatarri Studies 6 (2):328-352.
Transversality occupies a central place in Guattari's thought, appearing in his early writings on institutional analysis and on through to his final work, Chaosmosis. Transversality is thus particularly pertinent to understanding Guattari's critique of semiocapitalism and his goal of re-imagining forms of institutional subjectivisation as a way to free the unconscious from structures of lack and the desire for punishment, the very structures upon which capitalism relies for its reproduction. If there is one institution that has taken advantage of semiocapitalism's (...)

  5. … And … and … and … The Transversal Politics of Performative Encounters.Anja Kanngieser - 2012 - Deleuze and Guatarri Studies 6 (2):265-290.
This paper examines Guattari's notion of transversality through a creative and ambiguous form of political intervention, the performative encounter. Drawing from Guattari's work on subject groups, in combination with Deleuze's conjunctive ‘and’, via contemporary theorisations of creative activism and affect, it maps out a movement that destabilises categorical dualisms between activists and non-activists, artists and non-artists. It proposes that transversals such as those enacted by the performative encounter open spaces for the emergence of new subjectivities, relations and worlds. In doing (...)

  6. Go Fractalactic! A Brief Guide through Subjectivity in the Philosophy of Félix Guattari and Transversal Poetics.Bryan Reynolds & Adam Bryx - 2012 - Deleuze and Guatarri Studies 6 (2):291-305.
We adventure becomings-Merry Pranksters with Félix Guattari on Ken Kesey's magic bus to resonate the group's transversality that we already affect subjunctively, individually and plurally from which our subjectivities crystallise collectively and independently with intensive-extensions to go viscerallectric and fractalactic. Yet in-process, before our consciousnesses go motored, we swim with jet streams of both Guattari and transversal poetics to navigate subjective affects by which wilful parameterisations achieve desirable eventualisations.

  7. Transversalising the Ecological Turn: Four Components of Félix Guattari's Ecosophical Perspective.John C. Tinnell - 2012 - Deleuze and Guatarri Studies 6 (3):357-388.
Arguably, two of the most important forces affecting contemporary global culture are the growing awareness of ecological crises and the rapid spread of digital media. Félix Guattari's unfinished concept of ecosophy suggests the basis of a theoretical framework for constructing productive syntheses between the ecological and the digital. Moreover, a Guattarian rethinking of the ecological turn in the humanities challenges the philosophical basis of the pedagogy of Nature appreciation that has characterised the eco-humanities landscape since the 1970s. Guattari's ecosophy gestures (...)

  8. The Machinic Unconscious: Essays in Schizoanalysis.Felix Guattari - 2010 - Semiotext(E).
An early work that lays the foundation for establishing a “polemical” dimension to psychoanalysis. We certainly have the unconscious that we deserve, an unconscious for specialists, ready-made for an institutionalized discourse. I would rather see it as something that wraps itself around us in everyday objects, something that is involved with day-to-day problems, with the world outside. It would be the possible itself, open to the socius, to the cosmos...—from The Machinic Unconscious: Essays in Schizoanalysis In his seminal solo-authored work (...)

The article shows the importance of the paternal metaphor and the function of the father in psychoanalysis, as well as some misunderstandings that can occur regarding this function in philosophy, namely Deleuze and Guattari's critique of the father as a normative function of castration. It focuses on Freud's and Lacan's conception of the Oedipus complex and underlines some crucial changes that Lacan introduced while reading Freud's work and while constantly returning in his teaching to his own previous conceptions. Finally, the (...)

The following paper continues discussions within this journal about how the work of Delueze and Guattari can inform radical pedagogy. Building primarily on Noel Gough's 2004 paper, we take up the challenge to move towards a more creative form of ‘becoming cyborg’ in our teaching. In contrast to work that has focused on Deleuzian theories of the rhizome, we deploy Guattari's work on institutional schizoanalysis to explore the role of group creativity in radical pedagogy. The institutional therapies of Felix Guattari's (...)

This work seeks to examine the definition of culture that is presented by Sigmund Freud in “Civilization and its Discontents” faced with the analyses exposed by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari. The main idea of the essay is to show how the way that Freud outlines the culture shortens beforehand the possibility of man’s real participation in the social field, for it interrupts the flow of desire as the only reality accessible to men. The first part will treat Freud’s definition (...)

The concept of instituent practice should allow us to explore new pathways for institutional critique. This approach rests in part on the link between Félix Guattari’s reflections against structuralization and the closure of the institution, and the ideas of the anarchist individualist Max Stirner, the author of The Ego and its Own , who can be considered both a rival of Marx and a radical and precocious critic of the institution. I additionally establish a relation between the conceptual genealogy of (...)

My readings of Campo and Verghese revolve around three key (...)
