  2. The many laws in the periodic table.Vanessa A. Seifert - forthcoming - Philosophy of Science.
There are many- not just one- periodic laws in chemistry. These laws correspond to non-accidental regularity relations about physical and chemical properties of (sets of) chemical elements. I support this by showing how these regularity relations can be understood from the perspective of a philosophical analysis of laws. Specifically, I show that these relations instantiate standard features associated with laws; they can be spelled out in terms of two standard accounts of laws; and, they can coherently figure in debates about (...)

In vertebrate immune systems, antibodies serve as essential defenders against pathogens. Among non-mammalian tetrapods, immunoglobulin Y (IgY) is a predominant antibody class that combines functional characteristics of mammalian IgG and IgE. Although structurally conserved, IgY exhibits notable diversity across species. A recent study by Zhang et al. (2025) uncovers a previously unrecognized mechanism of IgY diversification in the snake Elaphe taeniura (E. taeniura), offering new insights into how evolutionary processes shape immune responses.

For decades, ethylene oxide (EtO) has played a crucial role in various industries, serving as a sterilizing agent for medical equipment, a key ingredient in plastics production, and a fumigant for food processing. However, despite its importance to public health and manufacturing, EtO is also classified as a known human carcinogen. A newly updated and comprehensive study now provides strong evidence linking long-term occupational exposure to EtO with an increased risk of breast cancer mortality among women.

Mass bleaching events, driven by thermal stress, disrupt the symbiotic relationship between corals and their algal partners, often resulting in coral mortality. However, not all corals perish. A study published in Communications Earth & Environment sheds light on the molecular and microbial mechanisms that distinguish resilient corals from those that succumb to heat stress.

  46. A Letter of Peter Hartzing to Gerhard Wolter Molanus.Andrea Strazzoni - 2020 - Noctua 7 (1):158-181.
This contribution provides a transcription and translation of, and a commentary on, a letter of the German-Dutch-Japanese polymath Peter Hartzing to Gerhard Wolter Molanus, abbot of Loccum and famous collector of coins and medals. In the commentary, a survey of the life and intellectual endeavours of Hartzing is provided.

  48. The Function of Microstructure in Boyle's Chemical Philosophy: 'Chymical Atoms' and Structural Explanation.Marina P. Banchetti - 2019 - Foundations of Chemistry 21 (1):51-59.
One of several important issues that inform contemporary philosophy of chemistry is the issue of structural explanation, precisely because modern chemistry is primarily concerned with microstructure. This paper argues that concern over microstructure, albeit understood differently than it is today, also informs the chemical philosophy of Robert Boyle (1627–1691). According to Boyle, the specific microstructure of ‘chymical atoms’, understood in geometric terms, accounts for the unique essential properties of different chemical substances. Because he considers the microstructure of ‘chymical atoms’ as (...)

  49. Phytoassessment of Vetiver grass enhanced with EDTA soil amendment grown in single and mixed heavy metal–contaminated soil.Chuck Chuan Ng - 2019 - Environmental Monitoring and Assessment 191 (434):1-16.
Over the years, ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate (EDTA) has been widely used for many purposes. However, there are inadequate phytoassessment studies conducted using EDTA in Vetiver grass. Hence, this study evaluates the phytoassessment (growth performance, accumulation trends, and proficiency of metal uptake) of Vetiver grass, Vetiveria zizanioides (Linn.) Nash in both single and mixed heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn)—disodium EDTA-enhanced contaminated soil. The plant growth, metal accumulation, and overall efficiency of metal uptake by different plant parts (lower root, upper root, lower (...)

  50. Harvesting the Promise of AOPs: An assessment and recommendations.Annamaria Carusi, Mark R. Davies, Giovanni De De Grandis, Beate I. Escher, Geoff Hodges, Kenneth M. Y. Leung, Maurice Wheelan, Catherine Willet & Gerald T. Ankley - 2018 - Science of the Total Environment 628:1542-1556.
The Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) concept is a knowledge assembly and communication tool to facilitate the transparent translation of mechanistic information into outcomes meaningful to the regulatory assessment of chemicals. The AOP framework and associated knowledgebases (KBs) have received significant attention and use in the regulatory toxicology community. However, it is increasingly apparent that the potential stakeholder community for the AOP concept and AOP KBs is broader than scientists and regulators directly involved in chemical safety assessment. In this paper we (...)
