    Inferential Validity and Imperative Inference Rules.Alfred F. MacKay - 1969 - Analysis 29 (5):145 - 156.
It would seem possible in principle … to reconstruct the ordinary sentential calculus in terms of phrastics only, and then apply it to indicatives and imperatives alike simply by adding the appropriate neustics.… It might be asked how we are to know, given two premisses in different moods, in what mood the conclusion is to be. The problem of the effect upon inferences of the moods of premisses and conclusion has been ignored by logicians who have not looked beyond the (...)

    A simplified proof of an impossibility theorem.Alfred F. Mackay - 1973 - Philosophy of Science 40 (2):175-177.
In this paper I prove a theorem which is similar to Arrow's famous impossibility theorem. I show that no social welfare function can be both minimally majoritarian and also independent of irrelevant alternatives. My condition of minimal majoritarianism is substantially weaker than simple majority rule.

The Incredibility of Rejecting Belief-Desire-Action Explanations.Alfred F. MacKay - 1982 - PSA: Proceedings of the Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association 1982:117 - 126.
If the conceptions of belief, desire, and action resemble phlogiston in their scientific standing, how is it that so many true, singular, causal claims about human behavior are made using these concepts? Alexander Rosenberg appeals to the distinction between attributive and referential uses of language to handle this objection. It is argued that this does not work, and that the truth of our singular, causal explanations of human behavior is little short of miraculous given his account of the nomological situation.

Fashioning the Immunological Self: The Biological Individuality of F. Macfarlane Burnet. [REVIEW]Warwick Anderson & Ian R. Mackay - 2014 - Journal of the History of Biology 47 (1):147-175.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the Australian microbiologist F. Macfarlane Burnet sought a biologically plausible explanation of antibody production. In this essay, we seek to recover the conceptual pathways that Burnet followed in his immunological theorizing. In so doing, we emphasize the influence of speculations on individuality, especially those of philosopher Alfred North Whitehead; the impact of cybernetics and information theory; and the contributions of clinical research into autoimmune disease that took place in Melbourne. We point to the influence (...)

Healing humanity: confronting our moral crisis.Alexander F. C. Webster, Alfred K. Siewers & David C. Ford (eds.) - 2020 - Jordanville, New York: Holy Trinity Publications.
Western societies today are coming unmoored in the face of an earth-shaking ethical and cultural paradigm shift. At its core is the question of what it means to be human and how we are meant to live. The old answers are no longer accepted; a dizzying array of options are offered in their stead. Underpinning this smorgasbord of lifestyles is a thicket of unquestioned assumptions, such as the separation of gender from biological sex, which not so long ago would have (...)

    Aristotle’s dilemma.A. F. Mackay - 2005 - The Journal of Ethics 9 (3-4):533-549.
In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle appears to use an elegant short argument to attack Plato's doctrine of the good, which argument equally appears to attack Aristotle's own doctrine of the good. I consider these two questions: First: Why does Aristotle reverse the judgment of Socrates/Plato on the issue: Which is better - things that are good in themselves, or things that are both good in themselves and good for their consequences? Second: Why does Aristotle attack Plato's doctrine that the Form (...)
