Is Practical Deliberation Bound by a Coherency Requirement? Foundational Normative States, Volitional Conflict, and Autonomy.Henk Jasper van Gils-Schmidt - 2023 - Philosophy 98 (1):55-79.
Harry G. Frankfurt has put the problem of volitional conflict at the center of philosophical attention. If you care fundamentally about your career and your family, but these cares conflict, this conflict undermines the coherency of your decision standard and thereby your ability to choose and act autonomously. The standard response to this problem is to argue that you can overcome volitional conflict by unifying your foundational motivational states. As Frankfurt puts it, the ‘totality of things that an agent cares (...)

    Knowing Within the Context of Creation.Henk G. Geertsema - 2008 - Faith and Philosophy 25 (3):237-260.
How should belief in creation affect our theoretical understanding of knowledge? In this essay I argue that traditional views of knowledge, illustrated by Plato and Descartes, cannot do justice to the integral meaning of reality as God’s creation. Making use of two metaphors, the visual metaphor for theoretical knowledge and the biblical one of hearing the divine promise-command to be, I sketch the outlines of a theoretical framework that takes belief in creation as its starting point. My approach is based (...)

In a recent issue of this journal René van Woudenberg meditated “on the question what ‘aspects’ and ‘functions’, within the bounds of CP 1, are supposed to be.”2 This meditation demands a reaction. The purpose of this paper is to “shed … at least some light on the question which … of the two is the more intelligible and useful notion”. Its aim is “not to discuss any theory about modal aspects … but to establish what the phenomena are that (...)

    Comments on friesen’s 95 theses on Herman Dooyeweerd.Henk G. Geertsema - 2009 - Philosophia Reformata 74 (2):115-128.
It is no easy task to respond to the 95 theses on Herman Dooyeweerd by J. Glenn Friesen. The theses are not complete in rendering Dooyeweerd’s thought. For example, his analyses of the history of philosophy and his legal philosophy are hardly touched upon. Yet the theses cover a wide range of topics that are central to Dooyeweerd’s philosophy. Therefore, to give a wellargued assessment of all of them would require more than one issue of this journal. Fortunately the editors (...)

    Which causality? Whose explanation?Henk G. Geertsema - 2002 - Philosophia Reformata 67 (2):172-185.
Not all questions for explanation are answered by referring to a cause. Yet many answers to questions like: Why is something the case? Why does this occur? do mention a cause or are phrased as a causal explanation. Salmon seems to suggest that even functional explanations might sometimes be reformulated as a causal one. As an illustration of a functional explanation he mentions the fact that jackrabbits in the southwestern part of the United States have extremely large ears because they (...)

Zuidervaart and Dooyeweerd: A Critical Retrieval? A Review Essay of Shattering Silos: Reimagining Knowledge, Politics, and Social Critique by Lambert Zuidervaart.Henk G. Geertsema - forthcoming - Philosophia Reformata:1-35.
In this review essay, I discuss how Lambert Zuidervaart relates to the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd in two of his books. He himself calls his work in this regard a critical retrieval. To answer the question as to how far this characterization is justified, we will look at Zuidervaart’s discussion of the religious antithesis and the transcendental critique, his idea of macrostructures and societal evil, and his view of truth and knowledge.

Task-Related Differences in Eye Movements in Individuals With Aphasia.Kimberly G. Smith, Joseph Schmidt, Bin Wang, John M. Henderson & Julius Fridriksson - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:388795.
Background: Neurotypical young adults show task-based modulation and stability of their eye movements across tasks. This study aimed to determine whether persons with aphasia (PWA) modulate their eye movements and show stability across tasks similarly to control participants. Methods: Forty-eight PWA and age-matched control participants completed four eye-tracking tasks: scene search, scene memorization, text-reading, and pseudo-reading. Results: Main effects of task emerged for mean fixation duration, saccade amplitude, and standard deviations of each, demonstrating task-based modulation of eye movements. Group by (...)

Theologie in Bewegung: Glaube und Skepsis in kritischer Aufnahme von Johann Georg Hamann.Timo G. Schmidt - 2015 - Leipzig: Evangelische Verlagsanstalt.

Taking a moral holiday? Physicians’ practical identities at the margins of professional ethics.Henk Jasper van Gils-Schmidt & Sabine Salloch - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
Physicians frequently encounter situations in which their professional practice is intermingled with moral affordances stemming from other domains of the physician’s lifeworld, such as family and friends, or from general morality pertaining to all humans. This article offers a typology of moral conflicts ‘at the margins of professionalism’ as well as a new theoretical framework for dealing with them. We start out by arguing that established theories of professional ethics do not offer sufficient guidance in situations where professional ethics overlaps (...)

Conceptuele Analyse en Christelijk Geloof. Over de Wijsgerige Theologie in Utrecht.Henk G. Geertsema - 1998 - Philosophia Reformata 63 (2):111-130.

Hilde Lindemann’s Counterstories: A Framework for Understanding the #MeToo Social Resistance Movement on Twitter.Henk Jasper van Gils-Schmidt - 2021 - Phenomenology and Mind 20:88-99.
This paper proposes a framework for understanding and analysing online social resistance movements based on Hilde Lindemann’s concept of counterstories (Damaged Identities, Narrative Repair, 2003). This framework is based on the premise that we shape our identities in shared social spaces, and that such shared spaces are structured according to so-called ‘master narratives’. Master narratives define the ‘realm of possible identities’ that we can assume, and form the basis for either recognizing or denying recognition to various social groups in specific (...)

Validation of the Apperception Test God Representations: An implicit measure to assess attachment to God representations. Glas & Liesbeth Eurelings-Bontekoe - 2020 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 42 (2):262-291.
In the context of theistic religions, God representations are an important factor in explaining associations between religion/spirituality and well-being/mental health. Although the limitations of self-report measures of God representations are widely acknowledged, well-validated implicit measures are still unavailable. Therefore, we developed an implicit Attachment to God measure, the Apperception Test God Representations. In this study, we examined reliability and validity of an experimental scale based on attachment theory. Seventy-one nonclinical and 74 clinical respondents told stories about 15 cards with images (...)
