A l'occasion de son 25eme anniversaire, le Groupement Belge des Banques d'Epargne a publie un ouvrage de base sur les aspects historiques, juridiques et economiques du monde des banques d'epargne belges. Emmanuel Levinas etait prie d'ecrire une introduction philosophique sur l'argent et l'epargne. Il a accepte volontiers, toutefois en soulignant des le debut et a plusieurs reprises qu'il y avait reflechi trop peu et qu'il eprouvait des difficultes en employant les notions valeur de l'argent/valeur de l'epargne. Il en a resulte (...) que cette etude, ne pouvant pas etre achevee a temps, ne faisait finalement pas partie de l'ouvrage de base. C'est l'entretien preparatoire, dirige par monsieur M. Lambrechts et dont il a envoye a l'avance a E. Levinas une preparation basee sur des textes d'E. Levinas, d'Aristote, de P. Veyne et de P. Claudel, qui est reproduit ici. Lors de la celebration solennelle au Palais des Congres a Bruxelles le 11 decembre 1986, c'est Emmanuel Levinas lui-meme qui a prononce le discours academique. Le texte de ce discours, qui n'a jamais ete publie jusqu'a aujourd'hui, est egalement reproduit dans cette publication. C'est d'ailleurs ce texte que Levinas a retravaille au debut de 1987 et qui est devenu sa contribution definitive sous le titre Socialite et argent. (shrink)

This is a three-part exchange on the relationship between belief and credence. It begins with an opening essay by Roger Clarke that argues for the claim that the notion of credence generalizes the notion of belief. Julia Staffel argues in her reply that we need to distinguish between mental states and models representing them, and that this helps us explain what it could mean that belief is a special case of credence. It is often supposed that in order to refute the view that laws of nature are necessary truths it is sufficient to appeal to Hume's argument from the conceivability of to the possibility of their being false. But while Hume's argument does present the necessitarian with insuperable difficulties it needs to be made clear just what these are. The mere appeal to Hume is quite insufficient for what he says can be interpreted in more than one way. And if it (...) constitutes an argument rather than a mere assertion Kneale has given reason to suppose that it is at least not obviously valid. The upshot of this article is that Hume's argument may be seen as a direct challenge to the notion that there could be propositions whose modal value is necessarily "opaque to the human intellect". This study provides evidence that eye movements reflect the positions of objects while participants listen to a spoken description, retell a previously heard spoken description, and describe a previously seen picture. This effect is equally strong in retelling from memory, irrespective of whether the original elicitation was spoken or visual. In addition, this effect occurs both while watching a blank white board and while sitting in complete darkness. This study includes 4 experiments. The first 2 experiments measured eye movements of (...) participants looking at a blank white board. Experiment 1 monitors eye movements of participants on 2 occasions: first, when participants listened to a prerecorded spoken scene description; second, when participants were later retelling it from memory. Experiment 2 first monitored eye movements of participants as they studied a complex picture visually, and then later as they described it from memory. The second pair of experiments (Experiments 3 and 4) replicated Experiments 1 and 2 with the only difference being that they were executed in complete darkness. This method of analysis differentiated between eye movements that are categorically correct relative to the positions of the whole eye gaze pattern (global correspondence) and eye movements that are only locally correct (local correspondence). The discussion relates the findings to the current debate on mental imagery. (shrink)

It is the foundation of the moral sense, as well as of the aesthetic and religious conceptions through which we shape the human world and endow it with meaning. And it lies outside the scope of modern materialist philosophy, even though it is a natural and not a supernatural fact. Ultimately, Scruton offers a new way of understanding how self-consciousness affects the question of how we should live.
