The discussion “scientism vs. dialectic” centers around the problem of value-judgements since Max Weber.Scientism holds the thesis that in all scholarly disciplines (whether politics, economics, law or the sciences) the value-free methods of the sciences should be followed. The dialectical scholars, following Kant, Hegel and Marx claim on the other hand the primacy of practical reason, i.e. that reason can (and should) justify norms. After an historical introduction into the controversy, this lecture sketches how the dialectical thesis can be proven. (...) The new approach consists in a critical reconstruction ofall the words relevant for the discussion, beginning with such ethical modalities as “obligatory,” “permissible.” With these words we judge about aims: the judgements are norms of the form, e.g., “Under the condition C, the aim A is obligatory” (in Symbols: C Δ A).The task in practical reason is to justify such norms. Practical philosophy has to provide the basic vocabulary and the principles of justification. It starts with basic terms of the philosophy of mind as “wanting” and “willing.” The teaching method has to be described without using these words. (For all details cf.Normative Logic and Ethics, B.J. Mannheim, 1969.) In the same sense as “true” opinions are the result of reasonable discussions in which all participants try to overcome (“transcend”) their merely subjective opinions, it is the result of “transsubjective” argumentation whether in a certain situation an aim is (morally) required or forbidden. This categorical imperative of transcending all mere subjectivity is a “formal” principle for justifying norms. Material norms are justifiable only by investigating the genesis of the cultural situation in which they are applied. This leads, in a critical reconstruction of a method of Hegel (especially in his “philosophy or right”), to the formulation of a “dialectical” method as a spiral movement from factual geneses to normative geneses.By this method philosophy does not prescribe any “values” but prescribes how the cultural sciences should proceed in establishing material norms. “Logic and Agon” is the text of a lecture given in Rome in 1958 by the German philosopher and mathematician Paul Lorenzen. In this inaugural text are laid the foundations of the dialogic logic, which represents an alternative approach to the question of meaning and logical truth, based on a dynamic formalism. Through the enrichment of the standard approach to logic with original tools, it allows a philosophical explanation of the foundations of the concept of formal validity. Clément (...) Lion proposes an unpublished French translation of this text as well as a presentation, in which he tries to show that the initial ambition of Paul Lorenzen was not so much to propose a new logical formalism as to question in principle any enterprise based on the use of such a formalism. Nach P. Janich wird eine "Uhr" definiert als ein Gerät, bei dem sich ein Punkt längs einer Geraden gleichförmig bewegt. Zur Definition von "gleichförmig" wird erst die "Ähnlichkeit" uhrenfrei definiert. Anschließend kann die "Eindeutigkeit" der Zeitmessung dadurch bewiesen werden, daß die Ähnlichkeit aller Uhren bewiesen wird. Die Gleichförmigkeit läßt sich jedoch, wie hier gezeigt werden soll, auch schon vor der Ähnlichkeit definieren.

Es gibt drei verschiedene "Anwendungsgebiete" der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie: Glücksspiele, statistische Gesetze in den Naturwissenschaften und wirtschaftliche Entscheidungen bei Risiko. Der probabilistische "Dualismus" versucht die verschiedenen Anwendungsgebiete dadurch verständlich zu machen, daß zwei "Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriffe" unterschieden werden: die statistische Wahrscheinlichkeit als eine "theoretische Größe" der Physik und die personelle Wahrscheinlichkeit der Entscheidungstheorie. Die Theorie der Glücksspiele bildet in beiden Fällen einen trivialen Spezialfall: das "ideale" Würfelspiel ist zugleich ein Spezialfall des statistisch zu untersuchenden Werfens von polyederförmigen Körpern und ein Spezialfall entscheidungstheoretisch zu behandelnder (...) Wetten . Es soll im folgenden gezeigt werden, daß eine konstruktive Theorie der Glücksspiele einen Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriff liefert, für den die Kolmogorow-Axiome gelten - und daß sich dann sowohl die statistische Physik als auch die Entscheidungstheorie als Anwendungen dieses einen Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriffes begründen lassen. Es ergibt sich dabei allerdings, daß die Gleichsetzung der Wahrscheinlichkeitsfelder mit den Modellen der Kolmogorow-Axiome nicht gerechtfertigt ist: Jedes Wahrscheinlichkeitsfeld ist ein Kolmogorowfeld - die Umkehrung folgt nicht. Die Einordnung des De Finettischen Gesetzes der großen Zahlen in die konstruktive Theorie zeigt, daß der Grundlagenstreit um "objektiv" und "subjektiv" nicht zwei Wahrscheinlichkeitsbegriffe erfordert, sondern zwei Anwendungen eines Begriffes. "Logic", one of the central words in Western intellectual history, compre hends in its meaning such diverse things as the Aristotelian syllogistic, the scholastic art of disputation, the transcendental logic of the Kantian critique, the dialectical logic of Hegel, and the mathematical logic of the Principia Mathematica of Whitehead and Russell. The term "Formal Logic", following Kant is generally used to distinguish formal logical reasonings, precisely as formal, from the remaining universal truths based on reason. (Cf. SCHOLZ, 1931). A text-book (...) example of a formal-logical inference which from "Some men are philosophers" and "All philosophers are wise" concludes that "Some men are wise" is called formal, because the validity of this inference depends only on the form ofthe given sentences -in particular it does not depend on the truth or falsity of these sentences. (On the dependence of logic on natural language, English, for example, compare Section 1 and 8). The form of a sentence like "Some men are philosophers", is that which remains preserved when the given predicates, here "men" and "philosophers" are replaced by arbitrary ones. The form itself can thus be represented by replacing the given predicates by variables. Variables are signs devoid of meaning, which may serve merely to indicate the place where meaningful constants (here the predicates) are to be inserted. As variables we shall use - as did Aristotle - letters, say P, Q and R, as variables for predicates. (shrink)
