    Newton's Contribution to the Science of Heat.D. L. Simms - 2004 - Annals of Science 61 (1):33-77.
The contents of Scala Graduum Caloris are described, supplemented by unpublished material. Both temperature measurements by his linseed oil thermometer and those based upon his law of cooling are shown to be reasonably accurate to 300°C, but above that value they are much too low. The apparent agreement and the deviation are explained by the differences between the assumptions that Newton made in deriving his law of cooling and the conditions in which he used it. Newton's attempts to link terrestrial (...)

The letter sent by the Royal Society to the London optician, John Marshall, in 1694, commending his new method of grinding, has been reprinted, and referred to, in recent years. However, there has been no comprehensive analysis of the method itself, the letter and the circumstances in which it was written, nor the consequences for trade practices. The significance of the approval by the Royal Society of this innovation and the use of that approbation by John Marshall and other practitioners (...)

Analyzing the Different Voice: Feminist Psychological Theory and Literary Texts.Lyn Mikel Brown, Susan Currier, Sally L. Kitch, Kathleen Gregory Klein, Gail L. Mortimer, Annie G. Rogers, Betty Sasaki, Barbara Schapiro, Mirella Servodidio, Donna D. Simms & Susan Sulriman (eds.) - 1998 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
These essays apply influential, pathbreaking psychological studies about women's lives to literature. In their analyses of fictional portraits, contributors both challenge and confirm psychological theories about female identity, about 'connection/separation' as developmental catalysts, and about the impact of gender on 'voice,' moral decision-making, and epistemology in relation to classical and contemporary literary texts, written by both women and men.

Rationalities in history: a Weberian essay in comparison.D. L. D'Avray - 2010 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
In Rationalities in history, the distinguished historian David d'Avray writes a new comparative history in the spirit of Max Weber. In a strikingly original reassessment of seminal Weberian ideas, d'Avray applies value rationality to the comparative history of religion and the philosophy of law. Integrating theories of rational choice, anthropological reflections on relativism, and the recent philosophy of rationality with Weber's conceptual framework, d'Avray seeks to disengage 'rationalisation' from its enduring association with Western 'modernity.' This mode of analysis is contextualised (...)

Consequences of clinical situations that cause critical care nurses to experience moral distress.D. L. Wiegand & M. Funk - 2012 - Nursing Ethics 19 (4):479-487.
Little is known about the consequences of moral distress. The purpose of this study was to identify clinical situations that caused nurses to experience moral distress, to understand the consequences of those situations, and to determine whether nurses would change their practice based on their experiences. The investigation used a descriptive approach. Open-ended surveys were distributed to a convenience sample of 204 critical care nurses employed at a university medical center. The analysis of participants’ responses used an inductive approach and (...)

From Information Search to the Loss of Personality: The Phenomenon of Dataism.D. L. Kobelieva & N. M. Nikolaienko - 2021 - Anthropological Measurements of Philosophical Research 20:100-112.
Purpose. The research is devoted to the analysis of the urgent problem of the information society: the overload of a person with information and, as a result, the impossibility of adequate formation and development of the personality; as well as the problem of "digitization" of human existence and the formation of a new reality of dataism. Theoretical basis. A lot of modern scientific works are devoted to the analysis of the information society, its problems and features. The information society is (...)

The ESRC research ethics framework and research ethics review at UK universities: rebuilding the Tower of Babel REC by REC.D. L. H. Hunter - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (11):815-820.
The history of the National Health Service research ethics system in the UK and some of the key drivers for its change into the present system are described. It is suggested that the key drivers were the unnecessary delay of research, the complexity of the array of processes and contradictions between research ethics committee (REC) decisions. It is then argued that the primary drivers for this change are and will be replicated by the systems of research ethics review being put (...)

    Thucydides' Description of the Great Plague at Athens.D. L. Page - 1953 - Classical Quarterly 3 (3-4):97-.
The nature of the Plague described by Thucydides in Book 2, chapter 49, has long been discussed both by medical and by classical scholars. Of numerous suggested identifications none has found general approval; and it is doubtful whether any opinion is more prevalent today than that the problem is insoluble. The classical scholar is handicapped by his ignorance of medical science; his medical colleague has often been led astray by translations deficient in exactitude if not disfigured by error. The difficulties (...)

Sextus Empiricus: Against the Grammarians.D. L. Blank (ed.) - 1998 - New York: Clarendon Press.
David Blank presents a new translation into clear modern English of a key treatise by one of the greatest of ancient philosophers, together with the first ever commentary on this work. Sextus Empiricus' Against the Grammarians is a polemical attack on ancient Greek ideas about grammar, and provides one of the best examples of sustained Sceptical reasoning.
