Fast 25 Jahre nach seinem Bestseller,,Unsere postmoderne Moderne" legt Wolfgang Welsch eine neuartige und tiefer gehende Infragestellung der Moderne vor. Als zentral für die Moderne sieht er das anthropische Prinzip an: In allem ist vom Menschen auszugehen, alles ist auf den Menschen zu beziehen; der Mensch ist das Maß der Welt, die Welt ist Menschenwelt - und nichts sonst, nichts darüber hinaus. Dem stellt er kritisch eine Reihe von Phänomenanalysen und die Skizze einer Anthropologie auf evolutionärer Grundlage entgegen. (...) The book demonstrates for the first time that transculturality – the mixed constitution of cultures – is by no means only a characteristic of the present, but has de facto determined the composition of cultures since time immemorial. This is demonstated using examples from the arts across all cultures and continents.

Im Zentrum dieses Bandes steht die Frage, wie unter Zugrundelegung der Evolutionstheorie Natur und Geist in ihrem Verhaltnis zueinander und in ihren verschiedenen Ausgestaltungen bestimmt werden konnen.

Die thematisch breit gefächerte Reihe umfasst Schriften zur Kunst- und Bildwissenschaft, Kulturgeschichte und Philosophie.

Die Parole von der Postmoderne ist missverständlich und wurde dennoch unumgänglich. Wolfgang Welsch spricht von einer "Magie des falschen Namens". Der Postmoderne-Diskurs ist allzu oft diffus statt präzis und droht in Beliebigkeit und Indifferenz abzugleiten. Anders in diesem Buch. Der Autor rekonstruiert die Geschichte des Ausdrucks und entwickelt einen Begriff von Postmoderne, der sich bezüglich der Literatur, der Architektur und der anderen Künste ebenso bewährt, wie er neuere Entwicklungen der Wissenschaftstheorie reflektiert, soziologische Fragen aufnimmt, Veränderungen in der Lebenswelt (...) diagnostiziert und die philosophischen Dimensionen des Themas durchleuchtet. Wolfgang Welsch blickt als Philosoph über die Grenzen seiner Disziplin hinaus und gibt ein Gesamtbild unserer Zeit. Er tut das in der Form eines Pluralitätskonzepts, das Unterschiede nicht tilgt, sondern freigibt und verteidigt. Welsch begegnet den postmodernen Tendenzen mit Aufgeschlossenheit, ohne ein modisches Verhältnis zu ihnen einzunehmen. Seine Version von Postmoderne ist problembewusst. Wolfgang Welsch examines global aestheticization phenomena, probes the relationship of aesthetics and ethics, and considers the broad relevance of aesthetics for contemporary thinking. He argues that modes of thought familiar from the aesthetic realm comprise fundamental paradigms for understanding todayÆs reality. The implications for specific and everyday issues are demonstrated in studies of architecture, advertising, the Internet, and our perception of the life world. Aesthetics is to transcend itself, address the whole realm of aethesis, and hence enable orientation in the contemporary condition. : Con este artículo confío en haber sometido a discusión por primera vez la tesis expresada en el título sobre el nacimiento de la filosofía potmoderna desde el espíritu del arte moderno. Trato de justificar esta tesis en cuatro apartados. Primero intento apoyar mi interpretación en un prominente autor de la postmodernidad filosófica: Lyotard. En segundo lugar la completo incluyendo otros autores: Foucault y Derrida. En tercer lugar me pregunto qué significa a la larga el origen estético para el pensamiento (...) postmoderno. ¿Queda acuñado estéticamente de manera especial? ¿Y sucede esto -si sucede- en un sentido dudoso o en un sentido ventajoso? Finalmente adopto una toma de postura respecto a la relación de arte y filosofía bajo las especiales condiciones del siglo XX. (shrink)

Der Essay thematisiert die Modifikationen, denen Tomasello seine Bestimmung des Humanspezifikums sukzessiv zu unterziehen genötigt war, und vermutet, dass den Verschiebungen ein prinzipielles Manko zu Grunde liegt. Während Tomasello erstaunlicherweise keine evolutionstheoretische Erklärung des putativen Humanspezifikums bietet , wird alternativ skizziert, wie sich die besondere Natur des Menschen während der protokulturellen Periode bis hin zum Durchstarten der kulturellen Evolution herausgebildet hat.

Maybe human aesthetics developed from animal aesthetics. I am not, of course, suggesting that sophisticated aesthetics as practiced by humans already exists among animals. Yet the aesthetic attitude as such might have originated in the animal kingdom. Drawing on this animal resource, human aesthetics might have evolved and, when cultural evolution emerged, it had reached results very different from animal aesthetics. With this perspective in mind, I show that the evolutionary aesthetics, as commonly pursued today, falls prey to serious shortcomings.

Cet article cherche à revenir sur la notion de beauté conçue comme « liberté des apparences » proposée par Schiller dans Callias ou de la beauté (1793), contre l’opposition de la pensée pré-moderne et moderne qui opposent de manière radicale la nature et la liberté. L’idée de Schiller que la beauté naturelle de la nature résulte de la liberté permet de résoudre cette opposition, comme le confirme la science moderne. L’article défend cette idée comme une manière souhaitable d’échapper aux cloisements (...) des modernes. (shrink)

Are all cultural products to be understood in cultural terms alone? The paper tries to open up our awareness beyond current culturalistic constrictions towards protocultural as well as transcultural factors involved in the production and understanding of art and other cultural phenomena.

The essay questions some aspects in the current propagation of a "return of beauty" and suggests that in fact there has merely been a boost in the discourse on beauty – whilst beauty itself has permanently and abundantly been around. Modern objections to beauty did not do away with beauty altogether but only attacked established types of beauty in favor of other ones. The paper critically discusses some effects of the present re-appraisal of beauty that are devastating to the perception (...) and production of art. Finally, it is recommended that we devote more attention to the phenomenon of breathtaking beauty and the fact of its universal appreciation without limitation to cultural context. (shrink)

What type of reason will work under the present conditions? To answer this question a meaningful conception of reason (as distinct from rationality) has to be developed, and is contemporary conditions (due to change in the field of rationality) have to be specified.In part I. of the paper, the radically altered structure of rationality is analysed; it turns out to be characterized by rational disorder. Part II. offers a redefinition of reason; guided by the idea of justice reason operates in (...) transition from one rationality to another. This new kind of reason - "transversal reason " - is further elaborated in part III. It is regarded as a key-element of any type of reason. (shrink)
