This book describes a program of research in computable structure theory. The goal is to find definability conditions corresponding to bounds on complexity which persist under isomorphism. The results apply to familiar kinds of structures (groups, fields, vector spaces, linear orderings Boolean algebras, Abelian p-groups, models of arithmetic). There are many interesting results already, but there are also many natural questions still to be answered. The book is self-contained in that it includes necessary background material from recursion theory (ordinal notations, (...) the hyperarithmetical hierarchy) and model theory (infinitary formulas, consistency properties). _Verificationism_ is the first comprehensive history of a concept that dominated philosophy and scientific methodology between the 1930s and the 1960s. The verificationist principle - the concept that a belief with no connection to experience is spurious - is the most sophisticated version of empiricism. More flexible ideas of verification are now being rehabilitated by a number of philosophers. C.J. Misak surveys the precursors, the main proponents and the rehabilitators. Unlike traditional studies, she follows verificationist theory beyond the demise of (...) positivism to examine its reappearance in the work of modern philosophers. Most interestingly, she argues that despite feminism's strenuous opposition to positivism, verificationist thought is at the heart of much of contemporary feminist philosophy. _Verificationism_ is an excellent assessment of a major and influential system of thought. The Statesman is Plato's neglected political work, but it is crucial for an understanding of the development of his political thinking. In some respects it continues themes from the Republic, particularly the importance of knowledge as entitlement to rule. But there are also changes: Plato has dropped the ambitious metaphysical synthesis of the Republic, changed his view of the moral psychology of the citizen, and revised his position on the role of law and institutions. In its presentation of the statesman's (...) expertise, the Statesman modifies, as well as defending in original ways, this central theme of the Republic. (shrink)

Barbey & Sloman's (B&S's) base-rate respect model is anticipated by Reyna's denominator neglect model. There are parallels at three levels: (a) explanations are grounded in a general cognitive theory (rather than in domain-specific ideas); (b) problem structure is treated as a key source of reasoning errors; and most importantly, (c) nested set relations are seen as the cause of base-rate neglect.

Consideration is given to some strategies to combat Huntington's disease in the absence of treatment to arrest its progress. Ethical issues for tests such as levodopa loading, to provoke symptoms prematurely in carriers of the gene, are compared with those associated with schemes for delaying the onset of disease. The major drawback of these designs is the uncertainty that prodromal symptoms may be extended unduly and the severity of deferred symptoms worsened. Some attention is also given to the possible use (...) of post-onset plans to reduce illness severity and prolong survival. It is concluded that the characteristics of persons less prone to undesirable consequences of onset-delay should be adequately investigated before attempting to implement such schedules as a practical measure. This out of print work offered researchers a comprehensive and easy to use bibliography of primary and secondary works by or about Collingwood. More than 1,200 citations were listed alphabetically by standard bibliographical categories in this volume, which contained a periodical index as well as author and subject indexes. In addition, each book entry included a "review alert" listing the names of reviewers. Author notes clarified the significance of a listed work when this was not apparent from the title, and (...) the number of pages was indicated for very long or very short monographs. This volume remains a standard reference work for Collingwood scholars and it is available in research libraries around the country. (shrink)
